Harrisburg Senators News Release
Danny Espinosa hit a two-run home run-his fourth in the past three games-to provide the only scoring for the Harrisburg Senators on Tuesday evening, but it proved to be enough to beat the visiting New Britain Rock Cats at Metro Bank Park, as the Sens won 2-0. Aaron Thompson, Hassan Pena, and Adam Carr combined to pitch the shutout.
Espinosa's blast came in the seventh inning, and was his team-leading fourteenth of the season. It scored Ofilio Castro, who had singled with one out earlier in the inning, and gave the Senators (48-49) the only lead for either team in the game. Espinosa homered off of reliever Chris Province. The Sens had put at least two men on base three separate times in the first six innings of the game, stranding the bases loaded in the sixth, but Espinosa's home run rendered those stranded runners moot.
Thompson threw the first six and two-thirds innings for the Sens, striking out seven and giving up just three hits. Pena (1-2) retired the next four batters and got the win, as he was the pitcher of record when Espinosa hit his home run. Province (5-2) suffered the loss for the Rock Cats (28-69), while Carr worked the ninth for his fourth save.
The Sens recorded nine hits in the ballgame, getting two apiece from Castro and reigning Eastern League Player of the Week Jesus Valdez. Espinosa, Marvin Lowrance, Chris Marrero, Michael Martinez, and Devin Ivany each registered one hit. Steve Singleton had two hits for New Britain in defeat.
Game three of the three-game series between the clubs is scheduled for 12 PM on Wednesday, with the Senators going for the sweep. Left-hander Ross Detwiler (1-2, 3.16) starts for the Sens, against RHP Mike McCardell (0-10, 5.79) of New Britain. Radio coverage begins at 11:45 AM on 1460 AM The Ticket and www.senatorsbaseball.com.
