Record Five Bombs Allowed as Aeros Slug Past Curve

Altoona Curve News Release

AKRON, Oh - The red-hot Akron Aeros won their sixth straight game by blasting five home runs off of Altoona starter Jared Hughes as the Curve dropped their third straight game in a 10-3 loss to the Cleveland Indians' Double-A affiliate on Tuesday night at Canal Park.

The five home runs permitted tied a franchise record which last occurred on August 2, 2006 at Harrisburg.

Hughes, who has not recorded a win since cruising to a league-best 10 victories on June 24 dropped his fourth straight decision allowing 10 runs (six earned) on nine hits over 3.2 innings pitched.

The Aeros grabbed an early 2-0 lead off of Hughes in the bottom of the first inning before the Curve would draw even in the game in the top of the third. Three straight two-out hits by Altoona helped them knot the score. A single by Gorkys Hernandez was immediately followed by an RBI double by Josh Harrison to make the score 2-1. The very next batter, Matt Hague would tie the contest with RBI single to bring home Harrison and deadlock the game.

After grabbing a 3-2 edge in the bottom of the inning with a Lonnie Chisenhall solo homer, the Aeros piled on seven runs on five hits in the bottom of the fourth.

A pair of two-run homers by John Drennan and Beau Mills along with a Jason Kipnis three-run shot knocked Hughes out of the game. The three homers in an inning also tied a dubious franchise record. Altoona pitching has not allowed a trio of homers in one frame since April 23, 2001 in a game at Harrisburg.

One bright spot for the Curve was southpaw reliever Tony Watson's season-high 4.1 scoreless innings. After coming on to record the final out of the fourth inning in relief of Hughes, Watson set down the first 12 batters he faced allowing only a two-out, eighth inning single as the only base runner of his appearance which saw the Pirates' 2007 ninth round pick out of Nebraska strike out five batters.

Altoona's third and final run came on a wild pitch uncorked by Aeros reliever Rob Bryson.

Altoona (57-38) will try to salvage the final game of the three-game set on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. Curve lefty Jeff Locke (1-0, 0.00) will make his second Double-A start for the Curve. The Aeros (51-45) will counter with RHP Paolo Espino (9-3, 3.76). Airtime on flagship radio station ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and Altoona Curve Radio Network affiliates is 6:35 p.m.

NOTES: Gorkys Hernandez finished the evening 2-for-4 and has recorded hits in 18 of his last 19 games played...Tuesday's loss ensures just the Curve's second losing road trip of the season.
