Snider's 4 RBI's Not Enough in 13-6 Loss
July 20, 2010 - Eastern League (EL1)
New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
(Manchester, NH)---Travis Snider brought home four New Hampshire base runners with a home run and a single, but it was not enough to keep pace with Portland in a 13-6 loss Tuesday night before 6,946 at Merchantsauto.com Stadium.
The Sea Dogs (48-48), winners of four straight games, scored in six consecutive innings to start the game when Matt Sheely hit his first homer of the season to give Portland a 13-4 lead. Sheely's run tied the most the Fisher Cats have given up all season to an opponent. New Hampshire has relinquished 13 runs on three occasions, most recently on May 30 against Trenton.
It took New Hampshire (57-39) until the seventh inning to record a shutout inning. Clint Everts, the Fisher Cats third pitcher of the night, got the job done even after New Hampshire committed their fourth error of the night, tying them with another season-high. Everts got out of the seventh with a double play and strike out, and followed that frame with scoreless eighth and ninth innings.
The Sea Dogs put the game out of reach by scoring five runs on five hits and two walks in the top of the fourth. Ten Portland batters came up to bat, and after six men reached base safely, New Hampshire starter and eventual loser Rey Gonzalez (1-2, 8.31) was lifted from the game. He finished after 3.1 innings, giving up 11 runs, nine of which were earned on 11 hits, while striking out one and walking five.
Portland tallied one more in the top of the fifth on the Fisher Cats third error of the night. Luis Exposito doubled, then scored when Fisher Cats reliever Ronald Uviedo couldn't hook up on the toss when trying to cover first on a Yamaico Navarro ground ball. The miscue made it 13-4.
Snider (2 for 5, 2 runs, 4 RBI) tried getting New Hampshire back in the game with one swing of the bat in the bottom of the third with a three-run home run that curled around the right field pole. Snider's shot scored Brian Jeroloman, who led off the inning with a double, and Darin Mastroianni, who later walked. The blast, which brought the score to 6-4, was Snider's second in 12 games playing for New Hampshire.
The Fisher Cats added two in the home-half of the seventh. After Portland starter, and eventual winner, Jeremy Kehrt (2-7, 5.20) left the game, New Hampshire touched up the bullpen for two runs. Jeroloman led off the inning with a walk, and scored on an RBI single by Snider. Eric Thames then plated Snider with a double to left, cutting the deficit to 13-6.
New Hampshire threw the ball around to help give Portland the early advantage. The Sea Dogs started a two-out rally in the top of the first off of a walk, and an error trying to cover second on a would-be 6-4 fielder's choice attempt. Anthony Rizzo then capitalized with a double, scoring both Ray Chang and Luis Exposito to make it 2-0.
The Fisher Cats cut the lead in half in the bottom of the second when Mastroianni doubled to leadoff the inning, moved to third on a fielder's choice and touched home on a passed ball. The Sea Dogs answered right back, however, to bring the score to 3-1 when Jorge Padron singled, took second on a botched pickoff and scored on a RBI double by Chih-Hsien Chiang.
Portland added to their cushion inning in the top of the third, highlighted by a slicing two-run single by Ryan Lavarnway, which scored Exposito and Navarro. Lavarnway eventually came home to score on a Sheely RBI single. Sheely, who replaced Che-Hsuan Lin after he was ejected in the midst of a 1-2 count during his at bat in the top of the second, widened the gap to 6-1.
The Fisher Cats will host the Portland Sea Dogs, Double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, in the finale of the home stand Wednesday. Reigning Eastern League Pitcher of the Week and New Hampshire south paw Jo-Jo Reyes (1-0, 0.00) will take on Portland top prospect Casey Kelly (2-4, 5.11). Fisher Cats Pre Game begins at 6:45 p.m. on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network with Bob Lipman.
An Atlas Fireworks Show follows the game Wednesday. Fans will also be playing USA Subs Baseball Bingo, and celebrating Oldies Night at the ballpark. The Fisher Cats are back in town from July 26-28 for a three game set against the Harrisburg Senators. For tickets, visit www.nhfishercats.com or call (603) 641-2005.
