
Thunder fall to Connecticut, 3-1

(Norwich, CT)- Connecticut pitching held Trenton to only seven hits, and the Defenders defeated Trenton 3-1 on Thursday night from Dodd Stadium in Norwich, Connecticut. Thursday night was Connecticut's home opener.
Connecticut (5-3) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning off of Thunder Starting Pitcher George Kontos (0-1). With the bases loaded and no outs, the first run of the frame came home on a wild pitch from Kontos. Connecticut Right fielder Eddy Martinez-Esteve then lifted a sacrifice fly RBI for the second run of the inning. In the first inning, Connecticut had three infield singles, and one man reached on an error by Kontos. Kontos allowed seven hits and three runs in 4 1/3 innings to take the loss. The Defenders tacked on a run in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Designated Hitter Adam Witter to make it 3-0. Trenton (3-3) chipped away with a run in the eighth inning. Right fielder Edwar Gonzalez connected on an RBI single to cut the gap to 3-1. Gonzalez had two hits in the game, and leads the team with seven RBI.
Connecticut Starting Pitcher Nick Pereira tossed four shutout innings and received a no-decision. He yielded just one hit and retired the first 10 batters of the game. Connecticut Reliever Matt Yourkin (1-0) picked up the win in relief. He relieved Pereira and notched two shutout innings. Connecticut Reliever Dan Otero pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his third save in four appearances. Trenton's bullpen pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings, and has gone 13 2/3 straight innings without allowing an earned run. Thunder Infielder Chris Malec had his five-game hit streak come to an end by going 0 x 4.
Trenton and Connecticut play the second game of the four-game series on Friday night at Dodd Stadium in Norwich, CT. RHP Zach McAllister (0-0, 1.80) will start for Trenton against Connecticut RHP Jesse Foppert (0-0, 0.00). Game time is set for 6:35 p.m.
