Sens win 7-2 in home opener over Reading

The historic 2009 home opener went the way of the home team on Thursday night with the Senators beating the Reading Phillies 7-2 in front of 4,034 fans at Metro Bank Park.

After a scoreless first inning, the Sens broke through for three runs in the second inning off Reading starter and eventual loser Joe Savery. Marvin Lowrance led the inning off with a long home run over the Capital Blue Cross Boardwalk making the score 1-0. Ian Desmond capped the inning off with a bases loaded two-run single to give the Sens a 3-0 lead.

Sens winning pitcher Justin Jones allowed an unearned run in the fourth while allowing four hits. Three relievers followed and even though the Phillies had base runners in every inning but the third inning the Sens turned a couple of big double plays to short circuit innings.

Mike Daniel pinch hit to lead off the seventh inning and homered to give the Sens a 4-2 lead. Javi Herrera lined a three-run home run over the fence in left to give the Sens a 7-2 in the last of the eighth.

Desmond and Lowrance both had two hits in the win. Harrisburg snapped their four-game losing streak and is now 2-4 on the season while Reading fell to 3-3 on the season.

Game two of the series is Friday night as the Sens send LH Ross Detwiler to the mound against RH Vance Worley for the R-Phils. Game time Friday is 7:00pm.
