No Place Like Home...The Aeros capped off an extremely successful first homestand with an early-morning triumph over Altoona yesterday, as Carlos Santana's first-inning grand slam held up as the difference in Akron's 4-1 win. Santana, ranked by the good folks at Baseball America as the top prospect in the Cleveland minor league system, hammered a 2-1 fastball from Curve left-hander Tony Watson deep over the left-center field fence to stake starter Hector Rondon to an early 4-0 lead that the Aeros would never relinquish. Santana has now hit both of his home runs and driven in eight of his 10 runs in Rondon's two starts this season.
5.2 on the Richter Scale...Speaking of Rondon, he tossed 5.2 impressive innings for the second straight start, while also earning his second victory of the season. The right-hander started very strongly, striking out four batters and not allowing a hit his first time through the order. Brian Friday broke up his no-hit bid in the third but Rondon responded by retiring the next six hitters in order before tiring a bit in the fifth, allowing a run on three hits. Rondon went back out for the sixth and walked Jose Tabata on four pitches to start the inning, but recovered to get the next two hitters before RHP Carlton Smith relieved him in his Akron debut and got the final out, leaving Rondon an out shy of recording a quality start for the second time. Rondon is now tied with Portland's Chris Province for the league lead with two wins each and also ranks fourth in the Eastern League with 11 strikeouts in the early going.
Smith and Wesson...Speaking of Smith, he impressed in his first Double-A appearance by working 1.1 perfect frames. The younger brother of former Aeros third baseman (and Indians top-prospect) Corey Smith, Carlton got the final out in the sixth thanks to the right arm of Carlos Santana, who gunned out Jose Tabata trying to steal second to end the inning. Smith then barely allowed a ball out of the infield in the seventh, getting a pair of groundouts before James Boone's pop fly to short carried into to shallow left field to end the inning.
Transaction...The Aeros made a roster move today, placing IF Jared Goedert on the DL with a strained right oblique and receiving C Armando Camacaro from Columbus. Goedert, who started at third base in each of Akron's first five games, was hitting just .154 (2-13) on the year but had drawn six walks against just one strikeout for an on-base percentage of .421. Camacaro opened the season on Columbus's disabled list with a left calf strain and has not appeared in a game this year.
This and That...RF Jerad Head stole Akron's first two bases of the year yesterday...LF Nick Weglarz struck out four times yesterday, the first four-strikeout performance since Brandon Chaves last July 6th at Binghamton.
