Trenton Thunder News Release
ALTOONA, PA - The Thunder recorded 11 hits, but could only score one run in a -1 defeat to the Altoona Curve on Thursday night at Peoples Natural Gas Field in Altoona, PA. With the loss, the Thunder's six-game win streak came to an end.
Right-hander Brian Keller was charged with the loss as he went just three innings on Thursday night. Altoona broke through for three runs in the second inning using a two-run single from Ke'Bryan Hayes as the big swing in the inning. Hayes' line drive toward the middle nicked off the glove of SS Wendell Rijo and into center field with the bases loaded.
Altoona added two more runs in the third inning with one run scoring on a throwing error by C Jorge Saez and another crossing home on a double play ball off the bat of Arden Pabst. Keller, having thrown 78 pitches, was lifted from the game; recording his shortest start of the 2018 campaign.
Chase Hodson and Matt Frawley followed Keller with five scoreless innings of relief to give the offense a chance to rally back. They combined to allow four baserunners and strikeout four.
The Thunder offense left opportunities on the table, stranding 11 baserunners throughout Thursday's game. The Thunder left two on base in the first inning and couldn't capitalize on extra base hits in the second, third, fifth and seventh inning. Bruce Caldwell finally broke through with an RBI single off Curve reliever Bret Helton. Caldwell's 35th RBI with the Thunder kept the team from being shutout for the tenth time this season.
Brandon Wagner paced the offensive attack with a three-hit night, his fourth straight game with multiple hits. Jhalan Jackson added two hits and is now 12-for-his-last-34.
Your Thunder return to ARM & HAMMER Park on Friday night at 7:00pm for a four-game series with the Reading Fightin Phils. RHP Nick Nelson (0-0, 3.38) will start for the Thunder, RHP Blake Quinn (0-1, 7.50) will go for Reading.
