Wichita Thunder News Release
The Wichita Thunder lost two games over the weekend, beginning with a 6-2 loss to the Missouri Mavericks on Friday night at the Kansas Coliseum. Missouri scored two late first period goals just 19 seconds apart, but second period tallies from Brandon Kaleniecki and Chris McAllister kept the Thunder within one goal. Wichita missed an opportunity to do further damage when Missouri killed off a five-minute continuous power play. The Mavericks then scored three times in the third to break the game open. Scott Campbell, who entered the game in relief of Jon Horrell, took the loss allowing four goals on 23 shots. Kaleniecki and Glenn Detulleo each had two points.
Wichita suffered a 2-0 shutout against the Texas Brahmas on Sunday evening in North Richland Hills. Texas scored an early goal in each of the first two periods, which proved enough support for goaltender Joe Palmer who earned a 39-save shutout. Wichita notched 17 shots on goal in the second period of the game, tying their season-high. Campbell took a tough loss, saving 24 of 26. Chris Kovalcik and Jay Henderson collected fighting majors. The loss dropped the Thunder to 0-6-1 against the Mavericks this season.
Christmas Game Postponed
The Thunder and Tulsa Oilers' scheduled match on Christmas was postponed due to inclement weather that forced the closing of major highways in between Kansas and Oklahoma. A makeup date at the BOK Center has not been announced yet.
Coliseum Countdown
The Thunder is rapidly approaching its final game at the Kansas Coliseum, host to every Thunder home game since the franchise began play in 1992-93. Just four games remain at the Britt Brown Arena, including two this week. The venue's final game is scheduled for Saturday, January 9th versus the Odessa Jackalopes. Wichita opens the new INTRUST Bank Arena on January 23rd when they host Tulsa.
Teddy Bears Delivered
The Thunder collected almost 1,300 teddy bears during their annual teddy bear toss on December 19th. The bears were delivered to various children's hospitals across Wichita.
Thunder Roughing Things Up
After the Thunder's two fighting majors on Sunday night at Texas, Wichita now has 39 major penalties on the season, second only to the Missouri Mavericks' 40. The Thunder also ranks third with four 10-minute misconducts and seven game misconducts. Chris McAllister's 31 minors and 102 PIM rank first among CHL defensemen. Chris Kovalcik is second among defensemen with 89 PIM and third with nine majors.
Campbell Working Hard
Rookie goaltender Scott Campbell saved 24 of 26 in the Thunder's 2-0 loss on Sunday. It marked Campbell's 17th appearance of the season. Campbell's career-high in college in games played was 16 set during his junior season at Lake Forest College.
Jorgensen's 100th
Defenseman Jim Jorgensen appeared in his 100th career game on Saturday versus Missouri. Jorgensen spent the first two seasons of his career in the ECHL, scoring a career-high 23 points with three teams last season.
Truelson Approaching Milestone
Defenseman Kevin Truelson is one point shy of 200 for his professional career. The New England native spent six seasons in the ECHL, including three straight seasons of 40 or more points from 2006-2008.
Injury Update
Jason Duda remains on the 30-Day IR with a back injury.
