Rapid City Rush News Release

(Loveland, CO) - On Sunday night, the Rapid City Rush stopped the Colorado Eagles winning streak at eight games with a 5-2 win at the Budweiser Events Center. Rapid City picked up their second-straight win in Loveland due in large part to their special teams play. The Rush tallied two powerplay goals on five chances while holding the Eagles scoreless on seven chances and netting a shorthanded goal.

Just five minutes into the first, Derek LeBlanc set up Brendon Hodge for his 11th of the season to make it 1-0. After the puck worked its way into the corner, Leblanc fired a puck to the slot area that found a wide-open Hodge who sent a one-timer past Andrew Penner. The Rush would then get a huge break near the end of the period while on the penalty kill. Rush defenseman Jamie VanderVeeken fired the puck down the length of the ice towards Andrew Penner who misplayed the puck and had it squeak over the goal line to make it 2-0. Despite the powerplays favoring the Eagles 4-0, the Rush outshot Colorado 13-11 in the opening period.

Early in the second, the Eagles would cut the lead in half when Fraser Filipic netted his second of the season. Steve Haddon slid a backhand pass down low to Filipic who cut around Miguel Beaudry to make it 2-1. Just over two minutes later, the Rush would score on their first powerplay chance of the game to double the lead, 3-1. Rich Hansen collected the puck behind the net and found LeBlanc to send it home from the doorstep. Rapid City then received another powerplay chance with less than two minutes left in the period, and once again, the Rush took advantage. Jon Pelle sent a rink-wide pass to Hodge who wound up for a slapshot from the right circle and fired a bullet to the top-left corner to make it 4-1.

In the third, the Eagles would pick up their second of the game when Ryan Tobler scored his 13th of the year at the 12 minute mark. Defenseman Aaron Schneekloth made the play all the way from his own end and into the Rush zone where he found Tobler in the high slot to make it 4-2. With over four minutes left, the Eagles picked up their second 5-on-3 chance of the game, but the Rush proved why they hold the #1 penalty kill in the league as they weathered the storm. Blaine Jarvis added an empty net goal with just over a minute left to bring the game to its 5-2 final.

Miguel Beaudry made 33 saves for his ninth win of the year while Penner stopped 28 shots for just his second regulation loss.

The Rush head to Wichita for a contest at the Kansas Coliseum on Tuesday at 6:05pm.
