Trenton Thunder News Release
(Norwich, CT)- Trenton Starting Pitcher Ivan Nova tossed 6 1/3 solid innings to lead Trenton past Connecticut 5-2 on Saturday night from Dodd Stadium in Norwich, CT. Nova's start was the longest outing for a Thunder starting pitcher so far this season.
With the game tied at 1-1 in the sixth inning, Trenton (5-3) erupted for three runs. With the bases loaded and nobody out in the sixth, Trenton Third baseman Marcos Vechionacci drove in the go-ahead run on a ground out off of Connecticut Reliever Dan Griffin (0-1). Then, Connecticut Shortstop Brian Bocock committed an error on a ground ball off the bat of Trenton Left fielder Colin Curtis, which allowed another run to score. The final run of the frame came home after an error commited by Connecticut Second baseman Brock Bond.
Connecticut (5-5) inched closer in the seventh inning by scoring a run to make it 4-2. Connecticut Center fielder Mike Mooney scored from third base on a wild pitch from Thunder reliever Kevin Whelan. But, the Thunder picked up an insurance in the top of eighth inning on a two-out RBI double by Center fielder Seth Fortenberry. That hit restored Trenton's three-run lead.
Nova yielded only five hits and two runs (one earned) over 6 1/3 innings to pick up the win. He struck out four and walked one. Whelan relieved Nova and pitched the final 2 2/3 innings for his first save of the season. It was his sixth career save for the Thunder. Griffin took the loss for Connecticut in relief of Defenders Starting Pitcher Henry Sosa. Sosa received a no-decision. He gave up only two hits and one run in five innings. Trenton Designated hitter Reegie Corona went 2 x 3 with a run, RBI and two walks in the win. Corona had an RBI single in the third inning. Trenton turned a season-high four double-plays defensively in the win.
Trenton and Connecticut play the final game of the four-game series on Sunday afternoon at Dodd Stadium in Norwich, CT. RHP Ryan Pope (0-0, 3.86) will start for Trenton against Connecticut RHP Daryl Maday (0-0, 0.00). Game time is set for 1:05 p.m.
