Altoona Curve News Release

ALTOONA, PA - The Altoona Curve got their first win of the 2009 season Saturday defeating Erie 7-5 at Blair County Ballpark.

Altoona started quickly when leadoff man Jim Negrych walked then advanced to third on a double by center fielder Jose Tabata. Both would score; Negrych on a fielder's choice and Tabata on a single by shortstop Pedro Lopez. The Curve bats kept it going in the second as Negrych smacked an RBI double into left center and then would score on a single by Tabata.

Erie (6-4) got on the board in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Jeff Frazier, Frazier would score two batters later on a double by Max St. Pierre.

Altoona managed two unearned runs in their half of the fourth after two walks and an error loaded the bases, with the runs scoring on a fielder's choice and a wild pitch.

Back to back doubles by Ryan Strieby and Diek Scram got the SeaWolves on the board in the eighth before Frazier blasted a two run homer to bring Erie within one, 6-5.

The Curve would answer Erie's rally attempt as Jonel Pacheco belted a solo home run to leadoff the bottom half of the eighth.

Curve starter Mike Crotta (1-0) had a fine outing tossing six and a third innings scattering six hits, allowing two runs, and recording six strikeouts which ties for the most of any Curve starter this season.

Altoona looks to build off its first win of the season Sunday in the series finale against Erie. The Curve will throw left hander Daniel Moskos (0-0, 10.38) who received a no decision in his only start of the season at Akron. Erie will be starting Jonah Nickerson , a right hander with an 0-1 record and 9.35 ERA.

First pitch is schedule for 3:05 p.m. at Blair County Ballpark. A youth soccer clinic will be held at BCB Sunday morning with registration beginning at 9:00 a.m. and the clinic is free to any youth with a ticket to Sunday's game.
