Wichita Thunder News Release
WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Thunder defeated the Colorado Eagles 5-3 at the INTRUST Bank Arena on Saturday night.
The win snapped the Thunder's five-game losing streak, as well as a 10-game head-to-head losing streak against the Eagles. Five different Thunder players scored in the win.
Leading 3-1 heading into the final period, Bobby Hughes scored Wichita's third unanswered goal using a soft backhand shot to beat Eagles' goaltender Andrew Penner at 9:20. Colorado rallied for scores from Adam Hogg at 9:45 and Brett Thurston at 16:31 to pull within one, but Troy Schwab's breakaway goal at 18:18 finished the scoring for the night. Schwab raced after a long pass from Travis Wight that originated from the Thunder defensive zone and beat Penner with a wrister from the slot.
After the Eagles tied the game at 1-1 on Kevin Ulanski's power play goal at 1:41 in the second, Wichita potted consecutive goals to take a 3-1 lead. Jesse Bennefield picked up Daniel Tetrault's headlong pass in the heart of the slot and beat Penner with a wristshot to his right at the 10:01 mark. Just over four minutes later, Matt Robinson grabbed an open puck above the right circle and ripped it under the crossbar for a power play goal.
Wichita took a 1-0 lead at 6:27 in the first period on a goal from Chris Greene. Greene hit the back of the net with a shot behind Penner, who was caught in front of the crease after playing the puck.
Marc-Antoine Gelinas earned the win, saving 24 of 27. Penner took the loss, saving 25 of 30. The victory was the Thunder's first against Penner who entered the contest 5-0-0 with lifetime marks of 1.29 and .944 against Wichita. The Thunder collected a point for a seventh consecutive home game. Each team was 1 for 3 on the power play.
