Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks wrapped up their two-game weekend set against the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees Saturday night at Independence Events Center. The Mavericks would end up sweeping the two weekend set with the Bees, skating to a 3-2 victory. Mavericks' forward Derek Pallardy lit up the scoreboard for the Mavericks, as he collected two goals on the night.
Saturday night's game started off slow for both teams. Only seven total shots had been taken by both teams combined just 10 minutes through the first period. Dominic D'Amour got the Mavericks on the board first with a power play goal on a shot from the point on a pass from Olivier Filion. The Mavs poured it on for the remainder of the period. Derek Pallardy was the next Mavericks' player to light up the scoreboard as he buried a pass from Simon Watson to put the Mavericks up 2-0. Walter Wintoneak, who now has four points in two games, was credited with an assist on the goal. The period ended with both teams nearly even in the shots on goal category. The Mavericks outshot the Bees 12-10 in the period.
Derek Pallardy once again found his way into the net early on in the second period. Just under two minutes into the period, Pallardy ripped a rebound past a sprawling Juliano Pagliero for his second goal of the night. Carlyle Lewis continued his assault on his reputation as an enforcer, recording a point in his third consecutive game on an assist on Pallardy's goal. Mike Berry was also given an assist on the goal. With the Mavericks up 3-0 and time slipping away, the Killer Bees responded quickly, as Darcy Campbell recorded yet another power play goal for the Bees. All three of the Killer Bees power play goals in their last two games with the Mavericks have come with a 5-on-3 advantage. Tomas Klempa received an assist on the power play tally. The Mavs and Bees finished the period tied in shots at 21 shots per team.
Rio Grande Valley made things interesting right off the bat in the third period, as Zak McClellan brought the Bees within one goal of the Mavs just a minute and a half into the final frame. Campbell and Brett Wilson recorded assists on the goal. That would be all that the Bees could muster for the remainder of the game as goaltender Rob Nolan stood tall in net, finishing with 26 saves on 28 shots. Juliano Pagliero finished the night with 29 saves on 32 shots as well.
The Mavericks finished the night one-for-six on the power play. The Bees could only muster one goal in six power play attempts. Derek Pallardy earned first star honors for the game with his two goals.
