Thunder adds young netminder

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Thunder today announced that they have signed rookie goaltender Jon Volp.

The 24-year-old Volp joins the Thunder from Division I Minnesota State University, where he spent four seasons and was a teammate of former Thunder players Nate Metcalf, Peter Runkel and Jerry Cunningham. This past season, Volp went 7-11-1 with a 3.41 goals against average.

A 6'2" native of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, Volp was the Mavericks starting goaltender the past three seasons. His best season came during his sophomore year, when he posted a 10-5-2 mark with a 3.01 goals against average and a .910 save percentage. Over his college career, Volp went 28-35-7 with a 3.68 goals against average and three shutouts.

"Jon is a big, butterfly goaltender who was very highly recommended by his coaches and former teammates", said Thunder head coach Derek Laxdal. "We've had a lot of success with players from Minnesota State and are confident that he will be able to step in and make an immediate impact."

Volp is the 10th player signed for the upcoming season, joining rookie forwards Kris Wiebe, Tim Earl and Ryan Coghlan, rookie defensemen Brandon Cox and Darren McMillan, as well as returning forwards Tyler Liebel, Joe Blaznek, Travis Clayton and Jason Duda.

The Thunder will open their 14th CHL season with a pair of home games on Friday, October 21st and Saturday, October 22nd. The full CHL schedule is expected to be announced tomorrow.
