Thunder Add Physical Defenseman

July 23, 2003 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Wichita Thunder News Release

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Thunder added some more size to the blueline today, signing 6-4, 225-pound Henrik Bergfors.

A ninth-round draft pick of the NHL's Tampa Bay Lightning in 2001, Bergfors has spent his entire playing career in his native Sweden. This past season he recorded two assists and 89 penalty minutes in just 33 games, playing for Sodertalje SK in the Swedish Elite League.

"Henrik is a player that the fans are going to like. He is a huge young player who loves to take the body and is not afraid to mix it up", said Thunder head coach Derek Laxdal. "He played last season in one of the best leagues in the world and the Lightning organization has had nothing but good things to say about him."

Bergfors, just 21 years old, will attend Tampa Bay's rookie camp this fall. He has been described by former Lightning GM Rick Dudley as; "a big man who can skate and has some skill. We like him very much, especially when you see his size", continued Dudley. "He's a very competitive kid."

The Thunder also announced that they will drop the puck on their 12th CHL season with a pair of home games at the Kansas Coliseum. The Thunder will open against the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs on Friday, October 17th, then host the Tulsa Oilers on Saturday, October 18th. Both games will face-off at 7:30 p.m. The entire CHL schedule will be released later today.

Season tickets for the 2003-04 season are on sale now, starting at just $198. For more information or to order tickets, call the Thunder office at 264-GOAL or visit our website at www.wichitathunder.com.
