San Angelo Saints News Release
SAN ANGELO â The San Angelo Saints today released the team's official 64-game 2003-04 schedule that includes 32 home games at the San Angelo Coliseum with the home opener set for October 18th against the expansion Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees. The first game of the regular season is set for Oct. 17th in Odessa.
This year's schedule is considerably different from last year with home games spread more evenly throughout the season including three home games in October, six in November, seven in December, seven in January, four in February and five in March. Also, with the CHL's recent realignment, the Saints' schedule features more games against new divisional rivals Odessa, Lubbock and Amarillo. The Saints will host Odessa 6 times this season, Lubbock 5 times and Amarillo 3 times. Other teams making multiple visits to the coliseum this season include Rio Grande Valley (3 times), Laredo (3 times), Fort Worth (3 times), Corpus Christi (2 times), Austin (2 times) and New Mexico (2 times). Wichita, Indianapolis and Colorado will each visit once.
22 of the Saints' 32 home games will be on Friday and Saturday nights with no Friday night games until after the end of the local high school football regular season. The Saints also have home games scheduled on several other key dates including Nov. 11th (Veteran's Day), Dec. 31st (New Year's Eve) and Feb. 14th (Valentine's Day). There are only six Tuesday games on the schedule (one each month), three Sunday games and one Wednesday game.
"We have been given a much better home schedule compared to last year," said Saints head coach Ray Edwards. "With most of our games pushed to the weekends it will give our fans better opportunities to come out and support the team. Plus, we don't have any month-long stretches without home games like we did last year."
Eight of the Saints' first 12 games are on the road this year. But, contrary to popular belief, Edwards prefers it that way.
"Starting the season this way will give us a chance to get to know each other," said Edwards. "The early season travel will help us bond and work out any kinks in our systems. We will also learn a lot about the character of our team with 8 of our first 12 games in enemy territory."
The CHL's master schedule and individual team schedules are available on-line at www.centralhockeyleague.com. The Saints schedule is also available on the team web-site at www.sanangelosaints.com. There are 17 teams in the CHL this season including expansion teams in Rio Grande Valley and Colorado.
So far, the Saints have 10 players signed for the upcoming season including forwards Steve Roberts, Trevor Weisgerber, Chris Peach, Jarett Metz, Brett Cross, Rob Frost and Jonathan Parker, and defensemen Konrad Brand, Corri Moffat and Derek Booth. More player signings are expected later this week and next week as Edwards continues to build the team's roster for Training Camp, which starts Oct. 5th. Exhibition games against Odessa are scheduled for Oct. 10th (home) and Oct. 11th (Odessa).
Season tickets and multi-game ticket and voucher packs remain on sale at the Saints office at 3111 Knickerbocker Road and at the San Angelo Convention Center. For ticket information call 944-6253.
