Scorpions 03-04 schedule announced

July 23, 2003 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
New Mexico Scorpions News Release

ALBUQUERQUE – The New Mexico Scorpions of the Central Hockey League announced the team's schedule for the 2003-04 regular season today, the club's eighth season of professional hockey and third in the CHL. The season begins on Thursday, Oct. 16 at Corpus Christi, the start of a five-game road trip to open the campaign. The home opener, as previously announced, is Friday, Oct. 31 at Tingley Coliseum against the expansion Colorado Eagles.

The Scorpions play the Eagles and the Lubbock Cotton Kings ten times, most of any teams in the league this coming season. The Scorpions will play Northwest Division rivals Oklahoma City, Tulsa and Wichita five times each (three at home, two on the road). In addition, the Scorpions will play I-40 rival Amarillo nine times, five at home and four times on the road. The Scorpions play every team except the expansion Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees, while Austin is the only other team besides the Killer Bees not to make an appearance in Albuquerque. New Mexico does not travel to Laredo.

The Scorpions' home schedule features 11 Friday home games and ten Saturday night home dates with three Sunday afternoon home dates, meaning 75 percent of all home games will be played on the weekend. The Scorpions will host six Tuesday and three Wednesday games. The special School Day game will return on Wednesday, Nov. 19 when Amarillo is in town for an 11 a.m. faceoff. Details for the game will be announced later this summer.

"We're looking forward to this year's schedule," said Scorpions Senior Vice President/General Manager Geoff Kent. "We should develop intense rivalries with our new divisional opponents, but I think our fans will also like the fact that we will still play a lot of games against our longtime rivals like Lubbock, Amarillo and Odessa. We are in the midst of planning numerous exciting events, including Opening Weekend, so this season should be fun.

Opening Night will begin at 7:35 p.m. while the remaining Tuesday through Saturday home games will start at 7:05 p.m. Sunday home games have been changed to 5:05 p.m. starts this season. Other highlights to the schedule include: a Thanksgiving Eve game against Tulsa on Wednesday, Nov. 26; the first-ever visit to Tingley Coliseum by the two-time defending champion Memphis RiverKings on Tuesday, Dec. 2; Christmas weekend games against Odessa on Friday, Dec. 26 and Corpus Christi on Saturday, Dec. 27; the return of the Laredo Bucks on Saturday, Jan. 31; and the regular season home finale against Oklahoma City on Saturday, March 6.

The Scorpions will be hosting the 2004 CHL All-Star Game at Tingley Coliseum on Thursday, January 22 at Tingley Coliseum. Season tickets for the 2003-2004 season start as low as $320, as prices have not changed for the upcoming season. For more information, call the Scorpions office at (505) 881-PUCK (7825).
