Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release
HIDALGO, TX: July 23, 2003 â The Central Hockey League released the official 2003-2004 regular season schedule today from their offices in Phoenix, Arizona, with each team matching last season's regular season combination of 32 home games and 32 road games to equal 64 games.
The inaugural Killer Bees will begin their season on Saturday, October 18th in San Angelo, which will mark the first ever game for the Killer Bees and will reunite Bees head coach Tracy Egeland with former teammate/coach and current San Angelo Saints head coach Ray Edwards. The two were teammates in Huntington of the ECHL during the 97/98 season and Egeland played under Edwards in part of the 98/99 season, as Edwards hung-up the skates and served as the head coach of the Huntington squad. The home opener for the Killer Bees will be Friday October 31st (Halloween Night), as the Bees host the Corpus Christi Rayz at 7:30 PM.
This season, the Killer Bees are positioned in the Southeast Division of the Southern Conference with Austin, Corpus Christi, and Laredo completing the division. The Killer Bees play an unbalanced schedule, and of their divisional rivals, the Killer Bees will faceoff with Austin 12 times (6 home, 6 road), Laredo 13 times (7 home, 6 road) and their most common opponent Corpus Christi, which the Bees will see 14 times (7 home, 7 road).
To best suit their fans, teams seek weekend dates, and the Killer Bees were able to get just that to please their fans. 28 of 32 Killer Bees home games will be scheduled on the weekends, leaving only 4 home games on weeknights. The longest road trip for the Killer Bees will come between January 27 â February 7, as they hit the road for 6 consecutive games. During that same stretch, the Killer Bees will play 10 of 13 games on the road. The longest homestand for the Bees falls December 12 â 30, as the Bees will play 7 consecutive home games. Six of the Killer Bees final seven games of the regular season will be on the road and the regular season will come to a close in Bossier-Shreveport. The Killer Bees only play three games outside of Texas. The only match-up between the two inaugural teams (the Killer Bees and the Colorado Eagles) this season will come on December 7th, as the Bees host Colorado.
Rio Grande Valley will play a 32-home game schedule consisting of 1 Monday, 2 Tuesday, 1 Thursday, 11 Friday, 11 Saturday, and 6 Sunday games. On Monday, March 1st, the Killer Bees are hosting their first ever "school game," which is an 11:00 AM contest (against San Angelo) at the coliseum for Rio Grande Valley area students. Additional info concerning the "school game" will be released at a later date. All home games will be played at the Rio Grande Valley Events Center and the standard game time for home games is set for 7:30 PM, and 6:00 PM for Sunday games (with November 16th's game scheduled for 3 PM), but all times are subject to change.
The Killer Bees promotional schedule and pre-season schedule has not been released, and will be released at a later date. If you would like to contact head coach Tracy Egeland about any scheduling concerns, arrangements can be made by contacting Chris Due at the Killer Bees office.
