Brampton Steelheads News Release
Mississauga, ON - The Mississauga Steelheads will be well represented at the 2014 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, as Sean Day, Michael McLeod, and prospect Nicolas Hague have all been selected to play for Team Canada. The tournament will run from October 31, 2014 - November 8, 2014 in Sarnia and Lambton, Ontario. The tournament will be the first to feature three Canadian national teams - Black, Red and White.
Over the summer, these three players were invited to take part in the Under-17 national development camp in Calgary, Alberta. They were successful in impressing the Hockey Canada coaches, scouts and executives at this weeklong camp and secured their spots on the national teams. There were 96 skaters invited to the development camp, and the final cuts reduced this number to just 66.
Sean Day, who is now in his 2nd season with the Steelheads after being granted "Exceptional Status" by Hockey Canada prior to the 2013-2014 season, had a night to remember as the Steelheads kicked off their regular season with an overtime victory last Friday. Day had two goals on the night, with one coming on the powerplay. The 6'2", 229-pound defenceman is a force to be reckoned with, whose physical play is beautifully complemented by his skating abilities and offensive upside. Day will be representing team Canada Red.
Michael McLeod made his OHL debut on Friday, and was the only Steelheads rookie to be named to the opening night starting roster. McLeod spent last season with the Toronto Marlboros and scored at nearly a two point-per-game pace, recording 21 goals and 36 assists in 33 regular season games. At the 2014 OHL cup, McLeod was awarded the Tim Adams Memorial Trophy, which recognizes the tournament's most valuable player. McLeod will also be representing team Canada Red.
Nicolas Hague is playing for the Kitchener Dutchmen Jr. B team of the Greater Ontario Hockey Junior League this season. Standing at 6'5", Hague was among the tallest defencemen invited to the development camp this summer. Much like Day, Hague's skating ability is regarded as his strongest asset, but he also possesses a keen hockey sense and excellent composure. Hague will be representing team Canada White.
The Steelheads would like to congratulate these three players on their accomplishments and wish them luck at the upcoming tournament. Although they will be missed from the roster, an opportunity to represent Canada is a special one indeed.
