Three-Run Homer by Roldani Baldwin Leads Portland to 8-7 Victory

BRIDGEWATER, NJ - Powered by a seven-run second inning, the Portland Sea Dogs beat the Somerset Patriots 8-7 on Thursday night at TD Bank Ballpark. The Sea Dogs improve to 51-34 and remain tied for third place in the Double-A Northeast League, 2.0 games out of first place.
Despite facing Corey Kluber on a rehab assignment for the New York Yankees, the Sea Dogs scored five runs on two hits against the Yankee in 1.1 innings of work. Matthew Kent was awarded the win for Portland pitching 5.1 innings allowing two runs on six hits while walking one and striking out five. Joan Martinez earned his second save of the year pitching 2.0 shutout and hitless innings while walking one and striking out two.
In the top of the first inning, Pedro Castellanos laced a single to left field then scored on an RBI single to rightfield and Portland was on the board, 1-0.
The Patriots took the lead in the bottom of the first inning. Brandon Lockridge led-off with double to right field and scored on an RBI single by Chris Gittens. Oswaldo Cabrera then singled to left field, moving Gittens to second base. Josh Breaux then doubled home Gittens and the Patriots led, 2-1. Michael Beltre blasted a three-run homer to extend Somerset's lead, 5-1.
In the top of the second inning, Kluber allowed three walks to load the bases. Castellanos then drew a bases loaded walk, bringing home Jeisson Rosario. Kluber then hit Triston Casas with a pitch, bringing home Cameron Cannon. Devlin Granberg roped a two-run double to left field and the game was tied, 5-5. Then in his first game back from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, bronze medalist Roldani Baldwin blasted a three-run homer to centerfield and the Sea Dogs led, 8-5.
Chris Gittens smashed a two-run homer to left field in the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Patriots continued to trail, 8-7.
The Sea Dogs and Patriots meet again tomorrow, Friday August 13th at 7:05pm. RHP Victor Santos (1-1, 3.38 ERA) will start for Portland while Somerset will send RHP Jhonny Brito (1-1, 3.00 ERA) to the mound.
