Five Ducks Homer, Hillman Wins 10th in Reading, 12-0

August 12, 2021 - Eastern League (EL)
Akron RubberDucks News Release

Left-hander Juan Hillman pitched five scoreless innings to earn his league-leading 10th win, and three Akron relievers combined on a shutout, while the RubberDucks tied a season high with five home runs in a 12-0 win in the second game of a six-game series in Reading Thursday night. Akron is a league-leading and season-best 23 games above .500.

Turning Point

Akron broke a scoreless tie with a five-run top of the third inning. First baseman Marcos González hit a leadoff single on a shallow fly ball to center field. With one out, left fielder Will Benson walked, and shortstop Brayan Rocchio was hit by a pitch. Center fielder Steven Kwan hit a two-run single to right field, before second baseman Andruw Monasterio smacked a three-run home run to center field for a 5-0 Akron lead.

Mound Presence

Hillman allowed consecutive singles to begin the first inning and loaded the bases with a one-out walk. He got right fielder Grenny Cumana to ground into an inning-ending double play, denying Reading's best scoring chance. The Fightin Phils never put another runner on third base. Hillman struck out six batters in five innings to win his fourth straight start and extend his 12-inning scoreless streak. Right-hander Dakody Clemmer and left-hander Skylar Arias each went a hitless inning, and right-hander Manuel Alvarez pitched two perfect innings, completing Akron's ninth shutout of the season.

Duck Tales

Akron extended the lead with a four-run fifth inning against Phillies rehabbing right-hander Seranthony Dominguez. Monasterio hit a leadoff double and scored on a two-out, third-strike wild pitch against designated hitter Jonathan Engelmann. González and third baseman José Fermín then hit consecutive homers off Dominguez to make it 9-0. Rocchio added his first Double-A homer in the sixth inning, and Engelmann hit his sixth in the seventh inning.
