Three-Run 8th Gives Pelicans Win in First Half Finale

MYRTLE BEACH, SC - Ending one of the craziest first halves of any team in minor league baseball, which included a NCAA Regional, an NCAA Super Regional, and an All-Star Game still to come, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans ended the first half of their season on a high note with a come-from-behind 5-2 victory over the Northern Division Champion Frederick Keys in front of 4,233 fans at BB&T Coastal Field.
Randall Delgado, one of the Pelicans' three All-Stars this season, has been one of the most snakebitten pitchers on the Birds' staff this year, earning a tick under two runs of support per start while racking up the second-best ERA in the league. On Sunday, it was same story, different day as the Pelicans' ace tossed seven innings of three-hit baseball, allowing two runs while striking out four, but the righty departed the game after the seventh with the score knotted at two.
The Birds drew first blood in the second when Calvin Culver beat out a ground ball to first base, knocking the ball loose from first baseman Joe Mahoney in the process. As the ball scooted away, Dan Nelson scampered home to score the game's first run.
Frederick regained the lead in the top of the fourth inning on a two-run, two-out single from Miguel Abreu that barely eluded the outstretched glove of a diving Mycal Jones. The Keys, however, mustered just three hits against Delgado in his seven innings of work and just four total on the evening.
With the score still at two apiece going to the bottom of the eighth, the Jones Trio once again was in the middle of another Pelicans victory. After Cole Miles roped a one-out single to center, Mycal Jones beat out a chopping ground ball to shortstop Greg Miclat to extend his hitting streak to a season-high ten games, the first Pelicans slugger to reach double digits this season.
With Miles and Jones on the basepaths, cleanup hitter Mike Jones blasted a John Mariotti (2-2) offering into the right-centerfield gap to plate a pair and give the Birds a late 4-2 lead. Travis Jones followed the double with a single of his own to get Mike to third, but Kyle Hudson bobbled the ball in centerfield, allowing Jones to score the Birds' fifth run.
Lefty Luis Avilan came out in the ninth to preserve the victory for former big leaguer Scott Proctor (1-0) who picked up his first win on the Grand Strand as Avilan recorded his second save with the Birds.
The Pelicans finished the first half with a record of 26-44 to best their first-half mark in the 2009 season by one game. After the All-Star Break, the team will travel to Potomac to begin a three-game series with the Nationals on Thursday, June 24 with first pitch coming at 7:03 ET.
