Dash Clinch First Half Title

Winston-Salem Dash News Release

WILMINGTON, DE (JUNE 20, 2010) - The Winston-Salem Dash clinched the first half Southern Division title tonight when the Salem Red Sox lost to the Kinston Indians 4-1 in Salem, Virginia. Winston-Salem lost to Wilmington 7-4 this afternoon, but entered the day needing only a win or a Red Sox loss to secure a postseason berth.

The Dash finished the first half with a record of 43-27, one game better than Salem's. It is the team's best first half mark since it finished with the same record in the first half of the 1991 season.

This marks the third consecutive season the Dash has made the playoffs and the 13th time since the league switched to its current divisional format in 1980. The team finished in first place in the Southern Division in both halves last year before falling to Salem in the first round of the playoffs. Winston-Salem will have the opportunity to win a record 12th Mills Cup Championship when the postseason begins on September 8.

The Dash and the second half Southern Division champion will play a best-of-five-game series in the first round, with Winston-Salem hosting the first two games and its opponent hosting at least the next two. If the Dash finishes in first place in the second half, Winston will host game five against the second-place second half finisher. The winner of the first round series will face Northern Division champion for the Mills Cup Championship.
