K-Tribe Beats Salem 4-1 to End First Half

The K-Tribe ended the first half in style, beating Salem 4-1 Sunday afternoon in Virginia.
Kinston starter Joe Gardner (6-1) was fantastic, giving up just two hits (to the first two batters he faced) and no runs. Gardner struck out a season high nine hitters and walked just one batter. Gardner picked up his sixth win of the season.
The K-Tribe got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning, when Lucas Montero led off with a single and Abner Abreu hit him home with an RBI double. Doug Pickens follwed with an RBI single to bring home Abreu and give Kinston a 2-0 lead. Salem starting pitcher Stolmy Pimentel lasted six innings giving up six hits and two earned runs.
With Gardner out of the game, Salem got their first run of the game off of Kinston reliever Chris Jones. After a single and two walks, Ryan Dent drove home Will Middlebrooks on an RBI ground out. Jones would settle down from there, striking out three straight batters and making way for Kinston Closer Cory Burns with two-outs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Burnes got out of the inning with a ground out. Burns got some insurance in the top of the ninth inning, when Ronald Rivas hit a two-run home run over the left field wall, his second homer of the season. Burns gave up a hit, but that was it in the ninth inning to pick up his tenth save of the season.
The K-Tribe finishes up the first half third place in the Southern Division with a record of 36-34. After the three day All-Star Break, the K-Tribe starts the second half at home. Don't miss the six game homestand Thursday, June 24th - Tuesday, June 29th at Historic Grainger Stadium.
