Five-run third propels Frederick to 9-1 victory over Birds

Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, SC- With just one more game left in the first half of the 2010 season, it appears the break can't come soon enough for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. After playing excellent baseball over the last month of the season, the Birds are limping into the break as the team suffered their third straight loss, dropping Saturday's contest at BB&T Coastal Field 9-1 to the Frederick Keys.
J.J. Hoover improved upon his tough outing last Sunday against Kinston with a five inning outing in his final tuneup before Tuesday's All-Star Game, but one bad inning derailed his start as five Key batters came around to score in the top of the third inning.
After retiring Billy Rowell on one pitch to begin the inning, five consecutive men reached base via three hits and a pair of walks, punctuated by a two-out, two-run bloop single to right by Ronnie Welty to make it a 5-0 game. The Keys added another run in the fifth and three more unearned tallies came around in the ninth to give the Northern Division Champions nine runs a night after scoring eight in a victory over the Birds.
Ryan Berry held the Pelican bats in check through five shutout innings, baffling Pelican batters with a quick pace and good control on the mound to go along with a dynamite mustache. Berry (2-0) was held to a low pitch count and came out after allowing just two hits and three baserunners in his five innings of work, leading Cole McCurry to toss the final four innings to nail down his first save of the season.
The Pelicans lone run came in the eighth inning off McCurry when the Birds loaded the bases with nobody out by virtue of two singles and a walk, but the Pelicans plated just one run on a Cole Miles RBI groundout.
The Keys offense is firing on all cylinders right now as each of the first five men in the batting order notched multi-hit games with All-Star Greg Miclat driving in four.
The Pelicans will try to salvage a game of this three-game set in the final game of the first half of the 2010 season for a 6:05 ET first pitch on Father's Day. As always with this Family Sunday, fans are allowed onto the playing surface before the game's first pitch to play catch, and after the final out is recorded, Pelicans fans will be treated to a spectacular fireworks extravaganza to close out the first half of the 2010 campaign.
