Three Home Runs Allowed

Calgary Vipers News Release


The Calgary Vipers surrendered three home runs and 15 hits in being defeated 11-5 by the Victoria Seals at Royal Athletic Park in Victoria, British Columbia. The Vipers finished their ten game road trip with a 7-3 record and split the four-game series with the Seals. With the loss the Vipers are now 20-9 on the Golden Baseball League season and remain two games behind the Chico Outlaws for first place in the North Division with the Outlaws also losing on the night.

Joe Sergent (2-2) received the loss after allowing five runs in three and two-third innings.

Victoria took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Wilver Perez singled and Terrence McClain hit a two-run shot.

Calgary got a run back in the fourth frame as Jorge Mejia singled, moved to second base on a groundout, and scored when Drew Miller reached on an error for a 2-1 score.

The Seals quickly added to their lead in the bottom of the inning as Matt Kavanaugh, Perez walked, the runners moved up on a wild pitch and stolen base, Dale Swinford hit a sacrifice fly which also scored a second run after an error, and McClain launched his second home run of the game for a 5-1 advantage.

In the fifth inning Victoria continued the onslaught when Brian Rios walked, Chris Van Rossum reached after both Luis Taveras and Mejia dropped pop flies, and Kavanaugh hit a three-run big fly for a 8-1 lead.

The Snakes got those three runs back in the next half inning as Guillermo Reyes walked, Mejia singled, Brent Metheny doubled in a run, Julio Ramirez hit a sacrifice fly that advanced both runners, and Miller grounded out for a run batted in and a 8-4 score.

Two more runs were scored by the Seals in the bottom of the sixth when Josh Arhart, Rios, and Van Rossum all hit doubles for a 10-4 advantage.

Reyes hit his second home run of the season for Calgary in the seventh frame to make the score 10-5.

Victoria got that run back in the bottom of the inning as Swinford, McClain, and Arhart hit back-to-back-to-back singles for a 11-5 lead.

The Vipers now return home to Calgary and Foothills Stadium on Friday June 25th at 7:05 PM MDT against the Victoria Seals. On Saturday June 26th the two teams will play a double-header starting at 1:35 PM MDT and it will be Kid's Day at the ballpark where the Inflatamaniacs will perform along with Clowns and Magicians.

On Tuesday June 29th and Wednesday June 30th at 7:05 PM MDT the Vipers will host the Edmonton Capitals for a two-game series. It will be Toonie Tuesday on the 29th and after the game on the 30th the Vipers will host a Canada Day Fireworks Spectacular.
