Calgary Takes Game Three By A 6-5 final

June 24, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Victoria Seals News Release

Returning to Royal Athletic Park for game three against the Calgary Vipers, the Victoria Seals settled in for their third game in the past two nights on Wednesday. Returning to the number one spot in their rotation, Victoria handed the ball to Jason Kershner (3-2) for the start while the visiting side turning to ace Dusty Gober (3-0) on the hill.

It was the Vipers striking in the top of the first inning when both Guillermo Reyes and Brent Metheny singled before Julio Ramirez doubled in a 1-0 lead. The next batter, Drew Miller, then sent a ground ball to first that was mishandled by Josh Arhart, allowing Metheny to cross home for a 2-0 Calgary advantage.

Following three scoreless frames, the Seals got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning. That's when base hits from Mike Mooney and Brian Rios set up a three-run bomb courtesy of Arhart to hand Victoria a 3-2 advantage.

Returning to the scoresheet in the next half inning, Calgary used a lead-off walk to Gober before Reyes doubled and Jorge Mejia picked up an RBI ground out to tie the game. Then, after the second Seals error in the frame but Metheny on, Ramirez drove a three-run home run over the outfield fence to put the Vipers up 6-3.

Clawing back into the game in the seventh inning, pinch-hitter Chris Van Rossum drew a walk and later scored on a Dale Swinford RBI single to get the Seals within two. Victoria then pulled within one at 6-5 in the eighth, using a single from Rios ahead of another RBI base hit, this time off the bat of Charlie Strandlund. Unable to muster any more offense against Calgary closer Claudio Galva, however, the Seals fall in game three by a 6-5 final at Royal Athletic Park.

Jason Kershner was handed his third loss of the season, while Dusty Gober improved to 4-0 with his seven innings of work on the mound. Julio Ramirez' 3-for-5, four runs batted in outing paced the offence for the Vipers, while Josh Arhart's three cashed in was not enough for Victoria.
