Tucson Defeats St. George 9-5

The Tucson Toros scored 5 late runs to the defeat the St. George Roadrunners 9-5 on Wednesday. The victory evened up the series 1-1 with 1 game remaining.

The Toros snapped a 4-4 tie with 3 runs in the 6th and 2 more in the 7th to break the game open. St. George threatened late, with Emiliano Fruto stranding 3 inherited runners by recording the final out in the 8th inning. The Roadrunners loaded the bases again in the 9th, scoring 1-run and bringing the tying run to the plate before Fruto got the final out to preserve the lead.

Tucson utilized a barrage off small ball to produce 9 runs against the Roadrunners pitchers, out hitting St. George 14-7 with all 14 of their hits coming in the form of singles.

Wally Backman Jr. reached base 5 times for Tucson, going 3-for-3 with 2 walks, 2 runs scored and an RBI. Cristobal Santana also had 3 hits to go along with a run scored and 2 RBI. Jose Valdez led the team with 3 runs, getting on base on 2 hits and 2 walks.

Righthander James Garcia evened his record at 2-2 by limiting St. George to 4 runs over 6 inning. Pitcher Vince Davis, who pitched and hit a home run the night before, pinch hit and drew a bases loaded walk to drive in a run.

The Toros and Roadrunners play the final game of the 3 game series in St. George on Thursday. Tucson's next homestand will begin with a Fireworks Friday on June 25th at 7:00 p.m. against Maui.
