Three Former Woodchucks Drafted in First Eight Rounds

WAUSAU - June 5, 2012 - As baseball players all around the country sit and nervously await their fate during the Major League Baseball draft, three Woodchucks have heard their names called in the first eight rounds.

The first former "˜Chuck taken off the board was Jon Moscot of the 2010 Woodchucks. Moscot, a pitcher from Pepperdine University, was taken by the Cincinnati Reds in the fourth round. Moscot threw 22.1 innings for the "˜Chucks in 2010, only allowing three earned runs (1.21 ERA) and recording 23 strikeouts. Moscot was 7-5 with the Waves this spring as a starter with a stout 2.90 ERA.

With the first pick in the eighth round, the Houston Astros took Tyler Heineman of the 2011 Woodchuck ballclub. Heineman, a catcher from UCLA, hit .184 with the "˜Chucks over 49 at bats but was able to draw an impressive 15 walks compared to only two strikeouts. Heineman broke out this spring with the Bruins, hitting .351 with 26 RBI's and a .451 on-base percentage. Heineman was a candidate for the Johnny Bench award for the nation's best catcher.

At the end of the same round, a member of the 2009 club, Josh Ludy, was the third Woodchuck taken. Ludy, a catcher from Baylor, was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies with the 278th overall pick. He recorded three hits in 20 at-bats with the Woodchucks after his freshman year with the Bears. This spring, Ludy broke out with the Bears with a .368 average, 15 home runs, and 69 RBI's.
