Former Bullfrog Mitch Haniger Drafted by Brewers in 1st Round

Former Bullfrog Mitch Haniger (Cal Poly) was selected 38th overall by the Milwaukee Brewers in Major League Baseball's draft last night.

Haniger spent part of the 2011 season with Green Bay. Nagging injuries shortened his his campaign. While Haniger appeard in just 24 games in 2011, he made a significant impact by hitting .277 with 7 doubles, 5 home runs and 22 RBI. His .542 slugging percentage was 2nd on the team. The Mustang outfielder's skills certainly had an impact throught the league as Baseball America named Haniger the #3 draft prospect throughout the Northwoods.

At Cal Poly this year, Haniger batted .346 with 13 home runs and 64 RBI. That was good for best in the Big West in the latter two categories.

At 38th overall, Haniger marks the earliest a Bullfrog has every been taken in the MLB draft. The previous highest was Josh Prince, who was selected 105th overall in 2009, also by the Brewers.

Haniger is one of three hitters drafted by Milwaukee on the draft's opening night. The pick the Brewers selected him with is the compensatory pick they received for losing Prince Fielder in free agency over the offseason. The draft continues Tuesday with rounds 2-20.
