Three Falcons to Participate in AHL All-Star Classic
January 17, 2013 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Springfield Falcons News Release
Springfield, Mass. - Springfield Falcons forward Jonathan Audy-Marchessault, defenseman Tim Erixon, and goaltender Curtis McElhinney have been selected to participate in the 2013 Dunkin' Donuts AHL All-Star Classic, which will take place Jan. 27-28 in Providence, R.I.
Audy-Marchessault leads the Falcons and is third in the league with 40 points (16g-24a). The second-year pro from Quebec City registered his first-career hat trick on Tuesday night in a 7-5 Springfield victory over Manchester. Audy-Marchessault is an All-Star selection for the second-straight year after representing the Connecticut Whale as a rookie at the 2012 AHL All-Star Classic. He tied for the Whale lead in 2011-2012 with 64 points while leading all Connecticut skaters with 40 assists.
Erixon leads Springfield's defensemen with 24 points, 20 assists, and a career-high four goals. The second-year pro was acquired by Columbus from the New York Rangers this summer as part of a five-player trade. Erixon, from Port Chester, N.Y., garnered two assists in 18 games with the Rangers last year while spending most of the season with Connecticut, leading all Whale defensemen as a rookie with 30 assists and tying for first among the club's blueliners with 33 points in 52 contests. This is his first AHL All-Star selection.
McElhinney set a Falcons single-season record with his sixth shutout of 2012-2013 on Dec. 22 in Hershey. The eighth-year pro leads the AHL in shutouts, is tied for second with 17 victories, is sixth with a .928 save percentage, and is 10th with a 2.25 goals-against average. The London, Ontario product and Denver, Colo. resident was named the CCM/AHL Goaltender of the Month for October and the CCM/AHL Player of the Week for the period ending Nov. 11 earlier this season. This marks McElhinney's second All-Star selection, as the 29-year-old also participated with the Canadian All-Stars at the 2007 AHL All-Star Classic during his second-pro campaign with the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights.
The three All-Star selections equals the most in Falcons history. Springfield also had three representatives at the 1999 and 1997 AHL All-Star Classics.
Luke Richardson of the Binghamton Senators and Jon Cooper of the Syracuse Crunch will coach the Eastern Conference All-Star team; Dallas Eakins of the Toronto Marlies and Jeff Daniels of the Charlotte Checkers will guide the Western Conference club.
Beginning Friday and until Jan. 24, fans will have the opportunity to vote for the starting lineups for the 2013 AHL All-Star Game by visiting Facebook.com/TheAHL and completing the official CCM AHL All-Star Fan Ballot. Voters will also be entered to win prizes of a team-signed 2013 AHL All-Star stick (two) and team-signed 2013 AHL All-Star commemorative programs (10).
