Idaho Stampede News Release
BOISE, Idaho (February 1, 2008) - The Idaho Stampede utilized a 26-4 run, from 6:17 left in the third quarter to 8:33 left in the game, to defeat the Bakersfield Jam 98-89 Friday night in Boise. Three players for the Stampede finished with double doubles, with Lance Allred scoring 19 points and grabbing 12 rebounds, Mike Taylor had 15 points and 10 assists, and Mouhamed Sene finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds off the bench.
Bakersfield shot over 52% in the first half to build a 53-43 lead going into the break. Michael Cuffee scored 14 of his 16 points in the first half, on 6-for-9 shooting. The Jam came out in the third quarter looking to extend their lead, which grew to as much as 13 points before Idaho started to put their offensive game together. After two turnovers by Allred and Taylor, a Scooter McFadgon lay up put the Jam ahead 63-52 with 6:37 left in the third quarter.
"Bakersfield played very well defensively," said Stampede Head Coach Bryan Gates. "They did a lot of things on defense in the first half, that didn't allow us to play our type of game."
An Allred bank jump shot, a steal by Cory Violette, a Brent Petway jump shot, and an alley oop dunk by Petway following a turnover by Bakersfield seemed to spark the Stampede into their run during the third quarter. Idaho built as much as a 90-74 lead with 4:11 left in the game on a Taylor three-pointer.
"It took us a while to really get going," said Gates. "But I thought that we fought hard to come back and beat a much better team than their record would indicate."
The victory gives the Stampede their fifteenth straight win, which tied a NBA D-League record originally set by the Greenville Groove during the 2001-02 season. It also gives them a 14-0 record at home so far this year. Idaho finished with a season-high 20 offensive rebounds as a team.
The Stampede had five players in double figure scoring. Along with Allred, Taylor and Sene, Roberto Bergersen added a game-high 22 points and Mickeal Gelabale, in his first game on an NBA assignment from the Seattle SuperSonics, finished with 12 points.
Bakersfield finished with all five starters scoring in double figures. The Jam were led by McFadgon with 19 points, while Nick Lewis finished with 17 points and nine rebounds. Along with Cuffee, Andre Barrett contributed 16 points and eight assists, while James Peters added 13 points and nine rebounds.
The Jam (5-24), who suffered their second straight loss, will return home to face the Dakota Wizards tomorrow night. The Stampede (20-5) will look to extend their winning streak, as they will play the Anaheim Arsenal tomorrow and Monday in southern California.
