Colorado 14ers News Release
DENVER - Feb. 1, 2008 - All five starters scored in double figures as the Iowa Energy won its third straight game, beating the Colorado 14ers 121-119 in overtime Friday night. With the victory Iowa improves to 12-15 on the season, while Colorado falls to 14-12 on the year with the loss.
Duane Mitchell led all scorers with 28 points on the night, including the game winning drive to the basket with 3.1 seconds remaining in overtime. After Mitchell gave Iowa the lead, Colorado's Elton Brown misfired on a 17 foot turn-around jumper that would have forced double overtime.
"I think we played exceptionally well," said Energy Head Coach Nick Nurse. "We've now won three in a row with some home games coming up, so maybe we can get back into the picture a little bit."
Iowa controlled play early and built a 15 point lead in the third quarter before Colorado started to mount a comeback. The 14ers used a 30-14 run over the final 8:33 of the third period to take an 82-81 lead into the fourth after Kaniel Dickens closed the quarter with a 40 foot 3-pointer.
The Energy responded by scoring the first six points of the fourth quarter, and took a nine point lead with 3:00 to play. Dickens and Brian Greene countered by knocking down big 3-pointers for Colorado, pulling the 14ers within two with 29 seconds remaining. After a Mike Efevberha missed jumper, Colorado tied the game with 2.2 seconds left when Doug Thomas was called for goaltending on an Elton Brown jump-hook in the lane. Both teams had a chance to win the game in the final 2.2 seconds of regulation, but Efevberha was called for an offensive foul for Iowa and Colorado's buzzer beating attempt by Eddie Gill fell short forcing overtime.
In the overtime Mitchell scored five of the 12 Iowa points, including the drive that gave Iowa the lead in the final three seconds. Efevberha and Anthony Tolliver added 20 points apiece, and Jeff Horner chipped in 19 for the Energy in the victory.
Colorado was led by Gill's second triple double of the season. The 14ers point guard finished with 25 points, 12 rebounds, and 15 assists. D-League January Player of the Month Elton Brown added 26 points and six rebounds in the loss.
