Thompson Dazzles In Barnstormers Win

August 7, 2010 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release

The move of Sean Thompson to the bullpen continues to pay huge dividends for the Lancaster Barnstormers.

Thompson twirled 3 2/3 innings of one-hit, shutout relief on Saturday evening, leading the Lancaster Barnstormers to their second straight 5-3 victory over the Long Island Ducks, this time in front of 7,018 at Suffolk County Sports Park. He has gone 14 innings without giving up a run since the switch.

With the victory, the Barnstormers extended their lead to 3 ½ games over the York Revolution, who have dropped five in a row.

The slender lefty from LaJunta, Colorado, took over for Ross Peeples in the fourth inning and baffled the Ducks into the seventh with his variety of off speed pitches. The only hit off Thompson (2-7) was a pop fly off the bat of Matt Padgett that fell into shallow left center one out into the sixth inning. He walked two and struck out three.

Lancaster put a pair of runs on the board in the first inning off starter Kyle Jackson. Vic Gutierrez, who collected four of Lancaster's six hits, singled to right center with one out and moved ahead as Jason Perry walked. Jackson got Ryan Mulhern to fly out to right field for the second out. The right-hander lost his battle to Reggie Taylor, who planted a double over the head of right fielder Matt Esquivel, scoring both runners.

That lead did not hold up for long. Peeples, making only his second start of this season and just the third since 2005, yielded a leadoff single to Joey Gathright. Ray Navarrete picked up a walk, putting men at first and second. A wild pitch moved them up a base. Peeples then started and stopped, getting called for a balk by plate umpire Dan Wilson as Gathright was ushered home.

Robinson Cancel knocked Navarrete across with a sacrifice fly to right. With two outs, Javier Colina sent a pitch into the night, giving the Ducks a 3-2 lead.

The Ducks loaded the bases with two outs in the third but failed to score when Peeples retired Matt Padgett on a grounder to short. Long Island would not get another runner to third base in the game.

Meanwhile, the Barnstormers were stymied through six innings by Jackson, who allowed only three hits on the night. Lancaster took advantage of the change in the seventh. Adrian Martin walked Bryant Nelson with one out, then allowed Gutierrez' third single of the game. Jason Perry, who had been hitless in the series, belted his 20th homer of the season, a three-run blast to right center for the 5-3 lead.

Charlie Weatherby replaced Thompson with two outs in the seventh, picking up the next 1 1/3 innings. Tim Hamulack survived a single and error in the ninth inning to record his second save of the series and seventh of the season.

Lancaster will shoot for a sweep on Sunday at 5:05. The Barnstormers will sign former Major League left-hander Wayne Franklin for the start. He will be opposed by right-hander Jake Dittler (8-8).
