Newark Bears News Release
Newark, N.J. - Daryle Ward hit a two-out grand slam homer in the bottom of the ninth, capping an amazing six-run ninth inning rally, leading the Newark Bears to a 10-8 come-from-behind victory over the Somerset Patriots Friday night at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
The blast, Ward's second grand slam in a ninth inning this season, capped a four-hit, five RBI performance. Reliever Jerry Dunn, the fifth of Somerset's pitchers gave up the shot as the only batter he faced on the night. Andrew Dobies (0-1) walked the only two batters he faced in ninth, which saw three pitchers used by Manager Sparky Lyle.
The Bears entered the final frame trailing 8-4 when Eric Munson started the rally with a one-out solo homer to right, his third for the Bears in a little more than a week, off Jeff Kennard. After the second out was recorded, Randy Gress reached on a walk and Pablo Ozuna lofted a line drive to centerfield that should have ended the game, but the ball was dropped by Wayne Lydon to keep the inning alive. Dobies came on and walked Kennard Jones and Brian Barton to plate another run and the Bears just down by two. Armando Benitez, who pitched a scoreless ninth inning, earned his first win of the season.
The Bears took an early 2-0 lead in the home first inning as Jones and Barton ripped back-to-back doubles and Ward dropped in a RBI single. The Patriots sliced the lead to 2-1 when Matt Hagen doubled and came around to score on two errors by catcher Manny Mejia on the same play. Somerset tied the game for the first time in the third inning on a Jeff Nettles' RBI groundout. The Pats added a single run in the fourth on a Joe Holden RBI single after a leadoff triple by Elliott Ayala and another run in the fifth on a solo shot by Josh Pressley and it was 4-2.
Newark tied the game at 4-4 in the home sixth. After Barton and Ward drew one-out walks, Carl Everett came through with a two-run, two-out double. With two out in the seventh, Pressley bombed a pitch high off the batter's eye in centerfield to bring in a pair and put Somerset back up by two runs. The Patriots added two runs in the eighth inning off reliever Will Cunnane, making his Bears debut. A balk and a RBI single by Holden set the stage for the incredible ninth-inning rally. Ayala, Pressley and Holden all had three hits each for Somerset.
