Southern Maryland sinks York

York Revolution News Release
The York Revolution's comeback attempt fell short on Saturday night, as they fell to the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 7-5 in front of 6,182 fans at Sovereign Bank Stadium in York. The Revs will head into Sunday's finale looking to avoid back-to-back sweeps, while also attempting to snap a five-game losing streak.
Southern Maryland scored all of their runs in the first four innings, and again, had a multi-run lead before the Revs came to bat. Shaun Cumberland led off with a broken-bat infield single, which was followed by an RBI triple down the first base line from Casey Benjamin. Eric Crozier then pushed Benjamin across on a groundout to short.
The Revs answered with two of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Steve Haake roped a leadoff double down the first base line. James Shanks moved him to third base on a ground ball to second, and Ramon Castro drove him in on an RBI double slammed to deep center, his league-leading 31st double on the season. Castro advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on Jose Herrera's groundout to second.
The Blue Crabs took the lead for good with a four-run outburst in the second. Cumberland stroked an RBI double to right for the lead, and Benjamin launched a three-run homer to right field to make it 6-2.
Pat Osborn slung an RBI single into right with two outs in the fourth, chasing Revs starter Corey Thurman, as the Crabs lead grew to 7-2. The Revs missed a chance to escape the inning and avoid that run, but catcher John Pachot's pickoff attempt of Cumberland at second base went for naught, when he was able to escape a rundown and make it back to second, after a low throw delayed the play.
The York bullpen gave the offense a chance to come back, as Celson Polanco, Vince Perkins, Jim Heuser, and Sean Stidfole combined for 5.1 shutout innings.
Chuck Jeroloman and Liu Rodriguez started the fifth with back-to-back doubles, producing a run, and ending Blue Crabs starter Chris Hayes' string of seven consecutive batters retired, including 10 of the previous 11. Hayes, making his first career start, came back to strike out the next two, but Castro ripped a single through the hole into left, pulling York within 7-4.
Reliever John Koronka walked three straight batters in his Blue Crabs debut, loading the bases with no outs in the sixth. Jeff Ridgway came on to record the first two outs, but walked Haake to force in a run and make it 7-5. Steve Palazzolo entered, however, and retired Shanks on a groundout to preserve the lead, as the Revs left the bases loaded.
The Revs missed another great opportunity in the seventh inning. With one out, Herrera walked, and Erold Andrus smacked a single to right. Ian Bladergroen then crushed a fly ball to deep left-center, but with the Blue Crab outfield positioned deep, centerfielder Jeremy Owens was able to make a running catch at the wall.
Ryan Speier and Jim Ed Warden closed it out with a scoreless eighth and ninth inning, respectively.
Benjamin came within a double of the cycle, going 3-for-5 with a triple, homer, and four RBI. After his fourth inning single, he had hits in seven consecutive at-bats (including last night), which included three homers and eight RBI.
The Revs will aim to avoid the sweep Sunday at 5 p.m., with Damian Moss (1-0, 3.55) facing Kenny Rayborn (9-5, 4.16). The first 1,500 fans receive a Brooks Robinson Statue Replica Giveaway, presented by Insurance Services United. It's also a "Dog Day of Summer". The Sunday fun includes an Autograph Session, Catch on the Field, and Kids Run the Bases, presented by rabbittransit. Tickets are available at YorkRevolution.com, (717) 801-HITS, and in-person at the Apple Chevrolet Ticket Office. Playoff tickets for the Revs' Sprint to the Championship are also on sale now!
