Bridgeport Islanders News Release

Houston, TX - Mike Iggulden's goal with only five seconds remaining in regulation time tied the game, sending the contest to a shootout where each shooter for the Sound Tigers scored to help the team earn the 3-2 shootout victory over the Houston Aeros. Ben Walter scored his first goal of the season for the Sound Tigers while Krys Kolanos tallied both goals for the Aeros. In the shootout, Walter, Trevor Smith, Kurtis McLean and Blake Comeau had the goals. Peter Mannino earned the victory stopping 22 shots in the regulation and two in the shootout.

The first period belonged to the Aeros and Kolanos as he tallied his team leading eighth and ninth goals of the season. He gave the Aeros the 1-0 lead just over the halfway mark of the opening period when he took a pass from Corey Locke as he entered the Sound Tigers' zone from the right wing boards. Kolanos came in and snapped a shot over Mannino's glove to break the scoreless tie. Mitch Love also had an assist on the tally. Jesse Schultz set-up Kolanos' second marker of the period when he started a give-and-go play that ended with Kolanos banging the puck into the empty net at the back door. Locke also had an assist on the play.

Both net-minders would keep the game dead-locked at 2-0 in favor of the Aeros in the middle frame. Mannino's biggest save of the period came as Kolanos tried to sneak a shot through his legs. Kolanos skated into the zone along the near wing and looked up as if he was going to shoot but hesitated and then tried to go five-hole. Mannino was in position for the first shot but had to adjust, shifting to his left where he was able to keep his pads together to keep Kolanos from scoring his third goal of the game.

Walter was able to cut Houston's lead in half, 12:21 into the third period. Blake Comeau skated the puck into the Aeros' zone, dropped his shoulder and went to the net. Comeau was hauled down by a Houston defender but the puck sat loose at the left post where Walter was able to come in and poke it under Brust's right pad for his first tally this season. With the Sound Tigers on the power-play in the final minute of the regulation, Iggulden tied the score with only five ticks left. Kurtis McLean set the play up at the point and sent a pass down low to Walter. The center-man quickly fed a pass to Iggulden at the back-door where he one-timed the puck past Brust to tie the score at 2-2.

Neither team was able to decide the outcome in the overtime session so the game went to a shootout.

In the shootout, the Sound Tigers' shooters were unstoppable as all four players attempting a shot buried the puck on Brust. Walter shot first and was followed by Trevor Smith, McLean and Comeau. Mannino made the final save on Ryan Hamilton to clinch the victory for the Sound Tigers, winning the game 3-2 in a shootout.

Both goalies faced 24 shots and turned aside 22. Mannino earned the victory, his sixth this season. The Sound Tigers were 1-for-5 on the man-advantage and 3-for-3 on the penalty-kill. With the win, the Sound Tigers keep their top spot in the East Division and the AHL with a 12-3-0-2 record, which gives them 26 points.
