Springfield Falcons News Release
November 16, 2008 - What was to have been a home and home series between the Springfield Falcons and Worcester Sharks turned into a one-game affair, with Saturday night's game being postponed due to a power outage. The Sharks took advantage of the schedule change to defeat the Falcons 3-0 on the strength of Taylor Dakers' first professional shutout.
The loss dropped the Falcons to 7-4-2-1 and ended a string of six consecutive games in which Springfield recorded at least a point.
Worcester opened the game's scoring late in the first period off of T.J. Fox's first goal of the season, a wrist shot from the left face off circle that beat Devan Dubnyk high to the glove side. Fox was assisted by P.J. Fenton on the play.
Springfield had its own opportunities in the period, especially in the opening minutes on an early power play. Their best scoring opportunity came on the man advantage after a save by Dakers left the net wide open, but the Falcons could not capitalize on the ensuing scramble.
Despite stepping up the physical play to another level, the Falcons spent much of their time in the second period fending off Worcester's forwards, including a key 5-on-3 penalty kill early in the frame. Led by Dubnyk once again, Springfield refused to let the game get out of reach and held the Sharks' lead to one goal despite being heavily outshot through 40 minutes.
The Sharks were not to be deterred and came out in the third period looking to put the Falcons away for good. Cory Larose struck on the power play at 8:29 off a nifty cross ice pass from Riley Armstrong, deflecting the puck past the outstretched right leg of Dubnyk to give the Sharks a 2-0 lead.
The goal, also assisted by Sharks captain Ryan Vesce, ended a streak of 16 successful penalty kill opportunities for the Falcons over the past three games.
Worcester's Mike Morris would score again two minutes later to cement the victory for the Sharks.
