
Falcons Host The Sharks On Sunday

The Springfield Falcons and Worcester Sharks meet for the second time this season when they go
head-to-head on Sunday afternoon at the MassMutual Center. Today was also originally scheduled to be the conclusion of a home-and-home series between these two intra-state rivals, but Saturday night's game was postponed due to a major power outage at the DCU Center in Worcester. The Falcons and Sharks did play at the DCU Center on Tuesday, November 11 with Springfield skating away with a 2-0 win with goaltender Devan Dubnyk leading the way with 46 saves. Derek Bekar and Gilbert Brule scored for the Falcons in the first meeting against Worcester this season.
The Falcons head into Sunday's action with a 4-0-1-1 record in their last six games having defeated the Syracuse Crunch in a shootout on Friday night by a score of 2-1. Carl Corazzini scored his first marker of the year in the first period, while also netting the game-winner in the shootout. Devan Dubnyk was stellar in goal once again making 42 saves earning the game's top star. Springfield currently has a record of 7-3-2-1 on the season, good for 17 points and second place in the Atlantic Division standings.
The Sharks head into Springfield looking to snap a three-game losing streak having dropped an 8-3 decision on Friday night against the Providence Bruins. Steven Zalewski, Cory Larose, and Riley Armstrong scored for the Sharks in the loss. Worcester currently has a record of 5-8-0-0 in the Atlantic Division standings, good for 10 points and sixth place.
GETTING IT DONE: Falcons goaltender Devan Dubnyk has been rock solid over the last two games stopping 88 of a possible 89 shots in helping guide the Falcons to back-to-back wins this week. Dubnyk collected his first AHL shutout against the Worcester Sharks on Tuesday stopping all 46 shots he faced in a 2-0 win, followed by a 42-save effort on Friday night in a 2-1 triumph over the Syracuse Crunch. Dubnyk is tied for third in the league in wins, tied for first in games played (13), second in minutes played (253), 14th in goals against average (2.39) and seventh in save percentage (.925).
FIRST OF THE SEASON: Falcons forward Carl Corazzini scored his first goal of the season and added the game-winner in the shootout on Friday night against the Syracuse Crunch. Corazzini spent the 2007-08 campaign with the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins where he collected 24 goals, 36 assists, 60 points and 14 penalty minutes in 80 games played. He led the Griffins in goals, assists, points and games played. The Framingham, MA native is in his eighth professional season and has played in 452 career AHL contests totaling 240 points.
AHL DEBUT: Defenseman Rob Bina made his AHL debut on November 11 at Worcester collecting one assist. Bina started the season with the Falcons' ECHL affiliate, the Stockton Thunder, where he collected one goal and two assists for three points in seven games. Bina completed his final season at the University of North Dakota last year and was a teammate of fellow Edmonton Oilers prospect Taylor Chorney. Bina ranked second among all North Dakota defensemen in scoring during the 2007-08 season.
FILLING THE NET: Falcons forward Gilbert Brule scored his fifth goal of the season on Tuesday at Worcester and extended his scoring streak to three games with an assist on Friday night. For the season, he has five goals and two assists in eight contests. Brule is second on the Falcons in goals and fourth in points.
SHARKS PLAYER NOTES:
Sharks center Tom Cavanagh leads Worcester in scoring with six goals and seven assists for 13 points in 13 games. Cavanagh also leads the club with four power play goals.
Center Cory Larose is tied with teammate Tom Cavanagh for the team lead in goals with six. Larose is second on the team in scoring with six goals and four assists for 10 points in 10 games.
Former Falcon All-Star Ryan Vesce is tied with Cory Larose for second on the club in scoring with one goal and nine assists for 10 points in 13 games. Vesce played for the Falcons during the 2005-06 season when he registered 18 goals and 49 assists for 67 points in 80 games.
Springfield, MA native P.J. Fenton has recorded one goal and three assists for four points in 11 games with the Sharks this year. The former UMass-Amherst standout is in his first full season of pro hockey after making his pro debut on April 2, 2008 at Springfield.
