Hamilton Bulldogs News Release
Hamilton, ON - Hamilton Bulldogs defeated Rochester Americans 5-2 for the second straight night at Copps Coliseum in front of 4,012 fans. Hamilton centre Ryan Russell recorded three goals while the âDogs scored three shorthanded goals in the game, one shy of tying an AHL record for most shorthanded goals in a game.
The Americans opened the scoring at 18:48 of the first frame. Hamilton starting goaltender Marc Denis gathered the puck behind the net before attempting to clear the puck off the glass. Jordan Henry stopped the shot from exiting the zone before firing the puck into the empty goal as Denis did not make it back to the net in time.
The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard with a shorthanded goal at 6:06 of the second stanza. Kyle Chipchura and Russell skated into the Americans' zone on a 2-on-1. Chipchura waited patiently before sending the puck past a sprawled Amerks' defender and onto Russell's stick. Russell blasted a shot past Rochester starting goaltender David Shantz.
While on a five-on-three power play, Rochester regained the lead at 6:37 of the middle frame. Rory Fitzpatrick hammered a shot that squeaked through Denis' five-hole. The puck did not cross the line until Michal Repik skated in behind Denis and banged the puck into the net to make the game 2-1.
Russell added his second goal of the game at 4:05 of the final frame to tie the game 2-2. Russell dangled the puck by an Americans defenceman before taking a shot that Shantz saved. Russell recovered his own rebound and proceeded to deke past Shantz and backhand the puck into the net.
The âDogs added their second shorthanded marker of the game at 13:40 to take a 3-2 lead. Matt D'Agostini received a pass from Yanick Lehoux and snapped the puck from the top of the face off circle that beat Shantz high on the stick side.
Russell netted his third goal of the game and the Bulldogs third shorthanded marker of the game at 14:05. Chipchura fed a pass to Russell who was stationed in front of the net. Russell deked around Shantz before dumping the puck into the back of the net for Hamilton's first hat trick of the season.
At 19:59 in the third period, Lehoux caught a pass from Alex Henry and fired the puck into the open net to seal a 5-2 victory for the âDogs.
