
Third and Fourth Quarter Burst Lead Vipers Past Lakers

Edinburg, Texas - In a close game, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers (16-5), the NBA G League affiliate of the Houston Rockets, defeated the South Bay Lakers (12-7) 115-111 on Thursday night.
The Lakers got off to a hot start as the team went on a 12-0 run. South Bay led by as much as 17 points in the first quarter with a score of 27-10. The Vipers tried to gain momentum but were slowed down by the Lakers as South Bay took a 33-22 lead at the end of the first.
South Bay led for the majority of the second quarter but with 6:05 remaining on the clock Gerald Green obtained a rebound from a missed Vipers shot and managed to give RGV a lead for the first time during the game. The Lakers fought back and once again grasped the lead but with 2:29 remaining, an Anthony Lamb free throw tied the game 48-48. With just 30 seconds on the clock Christian Vital gave RGV a 55-54 lead but a couple of seconds later the Lakers scored off a layup and gave South Bay a 56-55 advantage at the half.
During the third quarter the Vipers were on a hot streak. For the first time during the game RGV led the entire quarter by as much as 10 points. South Bay edged in on the Vipers, but it was not enough to take the lead away from the home team as the Vipers took a 93-90 advantage. For the remainder of the game the Vipers fought until the very end and came out on top with a 115-111 victory.
Marcus Foster was the lead scorer of the night with 23 points, five rebounds and five assists. Three Vipers players hit a double; Lamb (21 points, 16 rebounds and eight assists), Mfiondu Kabengele (18 points and 11 rebounds) and Green (13 points and 10 rebounds). Vital added 17 points and Trhae Mitchell contributed 11 points and eight rebounds.
Los Angeles Lakers Two-Way player Mason Jones led South Bay with 22 points, six rebounds and six assists. Chaundee Brown Jr. totaled 20 points and six rebounds. Both Mac McClung (eight rebounds) and Paris Bass (10 rebounds) hit 17 points each. Jemerrio Jones was shy of a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds. Jay Huff finished the night with 13 points and six rebounds.
The Vipers are back in action tomorrow night at the Bert Ogden Arena with a rematch against the South Bay Lakers. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. The first 500 fans in attendance will receive a Vipers replica jersey presented by Lone Star National Bank. Attendees will also partake in a Batman themed night.
