ROYALS PRE-GAME NOTES -
Tonight, the Royals visit the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center in Rapid City, South Dakota, where the team will take on the Rapid City Rush for the first time in team history. The Royals and Rush will play a weekend pair here in South Dakota with the second game in the two-game set scheduled for tomorrow (Saturday, November 6 @ 9:05 pm Eastern).
-
Tonight's game will start the second half of the Royals current eight game road trip, which began with three in a row against the Idaho Steelheads in Boise, Idaho, and continued on Wednesday when Reading defeated the Colorado Eagles, 4-3, a the Budweiser Events Center in Loveland, Colorado. So far, the Royals have compiled a 2- 1-0-1 record on the season's longest roadie. o
After this pair of games against the Rush, the Royals will travel to Cincinnati, Ohio, where the team will face the Cincinnati Cyclones for one game (on Wednesday, November 9); and then will then finish the
trip with the team's second game of the year at WesBanco Arena in Wheeling, West Virginia on Friday, November 11.
o
This marks only the second time in team history that the Royals have gone for as long as eight consecutive games on the road. In the 2004-05 season, Reading played eight straight away from home ice in cities as geographically disparate as Toledo, Ohio; Jackson, Mississippi; Lafayette, Louisiana; Beaumont, Texas, and Pensacola, Florida (12/18/04 - 01/04/05). The team had considerable success on that jaunt, running off a record of 6-1-1 in those eight games
-
Wednesday's 4-3 victory in Colorado marked the third two-goal comeback win of the season for Royals-each of which has come on the road. As with Wednesday's contest, Reading also came back from a 2-0 deficit to win over the Wheeling Nailers, 4-3, (on October 20) and the Idaho Steelheads, 3-2 (on October 26). o
In last night's game, the Royals trailed the Eagles, 2-1, entering the third period during which the team rang off three goals to pull out the win. That marked the first time this season that Reading has entered the third period trailing the opposition and still won (1-2-0-0). o
Reading has gone 2-0-0-1 when tied with the opposition entering the third period; and so far outscored the team's opponents in the third period 11-7 (and 8-4 on the road).
-
Since scoring the game's first goal in the season opening 6-2 win over the Elmira Jackals, the Royals have gone six straight games in which the opposition has scored first; and in five of those games, Reading has fallen behind 2-0 before getting on the scoreboard. o
Overall, Reading has been outscored 8- 4 in the first period; and are currently a minus-5 (-5) to the opposition in the first period on the road, having been outscored 6-1.
-
Robbie Czarnik scored the Royals' first goal on Wednesday night 10:09 into the second period-sixteen seconds into the team's second power play-to make it a 2-1 game (Colorado). That was Czarnik's second goal of the year both of which have come while the team was playing with the man advantage. o
Last season, Czarnik led the Royals with twenty-three goals in fifty-one games prior to being traded to the Norfolk Admirals on March 8.
Czarnik scored a team-leading nine power play goals last season for Reading.
-
Steven Swavely tied Wednesday's game with his third goal of the year 3:10 into the third period. Swavely has recorded at least one point in six of the seven games played by the Royals (3g-3a=6pts).
-
2:09 after Swavely's game-tying goal, Chris McCarthy bagged his first power play goal of the year-and third goal overall of the season-while Reading was playing on the team's sixth power play opportunity of the game. o
McCarthy leads the Royals with seven points (3g-4a) in seven games. His three goals tie him for the team lead with Olivier Labelle and Steven Swavely.
-
Forty-nine seconds after McCarthy's PPG gave Reading a 3-2 lead, Mike Pereira bagged what proved to be the game winner on Reading's seventh opportunity with the man advantage of the game. o
For Pereira, that proved to be his second consecutive game winner for the team. Last season, Pereira led all players on the Royals' season-ending roster with nineteen goals. He also led the team with five GWGs.
-
Defenseman Florian Iberer recorded a pair of assists in Wednesday's game, including one on Pereira's game winner. That marked Iberer's first multi-point performance as a Royal.
-
Both forward Ian Watters and defenseman Miles Liberati recorded their respective first point of the season on Wednesday. Watters assisted on Swavely's game-tying goal early in the third period. While Liberati recorded his first point as a pro when he assisted on Pereira's game winner.
-
Mike Pelech, who picked up the primary assist on McCarthy's power play goal which gave the Royals a 3-2 lead in the third period, leads Reading with five assists (1g-5a). Pelech, who racked up a team-season high fifteen penalty minutes on Wednesday, also leads the Royals with twenty-five penalty minutes
-
On Wednesday, Kevin Sundher was also assessed with fifteen minutes in penalties, which included his first fighting major as a Royal when he took on Colorado's Teigan Zahn. o
Sundher's tilt against the Eagles was one of four fighting majors assessed that night against the Royals, who had only one fighting major in the prior six games. o
The other fights on Wednesday included Mike Pelech taking on Conor O'Donnell; Matt Wilkins fighting Darryl Bootland; and Jesper Petterson tussling with Ryan Harrison. o
Reading was assessed with a team season-high nine infractions for forty-six minutes in penalties on Wednesday, while the Eagles were touched up for 85 PIMs that night.
-
The Royals bagged a season-high three power play goals (including the game winner by Mike Pereira) on ten power play chances on Wednesday. o
Eight of the twenty-one total goals scored so far by Reading this season have come while the team was playing with the man advantage. o
The Royals 24.2% scoring ratio on the power play (8 - 33) is currently third best in the league.
-
On Wednesday, the Eagles touched the Royals up for a late power play goal (with 3:55 remaining in regulation) on their second power play chance of the night to make it a one goal game (4-3). o
That goal kept a string alive in which the Royals have allowed at least one power play goal in each of the seven games so far played by the team. o
Ten of the twenty-one goals scored against the Royals this season have come while the team was playing shorthanded. o
The team's 65.5% kill ratio on the PK (10 PPGAs in 29 chances for the opposition) is last in the league.
