Kansas City Mavericks News Release

TULSA, Okla. - The Missouri Mavericks led through 40 minutes of play but dropped a 3-1 decision on the road to the league-leading Tulsa Oilers on Friday night. The loss moved the Mavericks' record to 2-5-1 on the season.

For the first five minutes of the opening period Tulsa held the better of play and built a 4-1 shot advantage over the Mavericks. Ville Husso, in his second start with the Mavericks, turned away the early barrage and allowed for Missouri to gather itself and answer Tulsa's early pressure. The answer came in a big way just before the game was eight minutes old from the newly-minted line of Shawn Pauly, Dane Fox and Sam Povorozniouk. Pauly created a turnover in the neutral zone that led to a 2-on-1 for Fox and Povorozniouk. Fox made the headman pass and Povorozniouk deked around his defender to create an open lane to the goal. He beat Tulsa goalie Jamie Phillips from close range for his third goal of the season and a 1-0 Mavericks lead. The Mavericks were unable to score again, but out-shot Tulsa 12-9 in the frame and out-chanced the Oilers 2-1 on the power play.

Missouri and Tulsa traded quality scoring chances like prize fighters in the second period but Husso and Phillips stole the show with some sparkling saves. Husso denied 11 while Phillips turned away 12 on his end. Husso was at his best in the final minute of the stanza as a point shot with traffic in front cause havoc and Tulsa put two shots on goal. The Finnish rookie, however, fought off both shots and trapped the puck between his legs. Missouri generated multiple 2-on-1 rushes in the period but Phillips was there each time to make the save or play an angle that forced the shot to sail off target.

Tulsa's offense was opprotunistic early in the third period and cashed in two goals 4:24 apart. Adam Pleskach potted both; the first by deflecting a point shot past Husso, and the second by beating the Mavericks goalie with a wrist shot from the right wing. Missouri enjoyed a 10-8 shot advantage in the period, but had to resort to pulling Husso in a last-ditch effort to tie the game inside the final two minutes. Despite a couple of good scoring chances in the waning minutes, Missouri could not produce the tying goal Tulsa's Dan DeSalvo scored an empty-net goal in the final minute to seal the win.

Husso stopped 25 of 27 shots in his second start with the Mavericks. It was his first decision and his record stands at 0-1-0. The Mavericks were 0-for-4 on the power play and 2-for-2 on the penalty kill.
