St. John's IceCaps News Release


The IceCaps rediscovered their offensive touch in a light, two-game week. St. John's defeated the Connecticut Whale 5-1 Wednesday "" avenging a pair of home losses against the Whale earlier this month "" on the strength of Eric O'Dell's second career hat trick and a four-assist game from Kael Mouillierat. Sunday in Toronto, the IceCaps fell behind 5-1 after two periods but battled back with three third period tallies to fall just short in a comeback bid, losing 5-4 to the Marlies at Ricoh Coliseum. St. John's has three games on tap this weekend, including a visit to Hamilton Tuesday before returning home this weekend to host the Manchester Monarchs for two games. The St. John's IceCaps rebounded from a tough loss on Sunday to trump the Connecticut Whale 5-1 at XL Center Wednesday night.

Eric O'Dell scored three goals "" his second hat trick as an IceCap "" to pace St. John's (23-28-1-2). Kael Mouillierat picked up four assists while Ben Maxwell had a goal and an assist. Carl Klingberg notched a pair of helpers and Mark Dekanich stopped 25 shots for the win.

St. John's started fast and never looked back, potting three goals in the opening frame and clinching the win with a pair in the third. The IceCaps outshot the Whale 37-26 overall and controlled the flow for most of the game, using an aggressive forecheck to keep Connecticut on its heels for the majority of the contest.

The St. John's IceCaps were defeated by the Toronto Marlies 5-4 Sunday afternoon at Ricoh Coliseum.

Despite sporting the Marlies leads of 4-0 and 5-1, the IceCaps nearly made an incredible comeback, battling back to score three times in third period but ultimately falling just short.

The Marlies scored five times in the second period with first star Jake Gardiner factoring in on three of those tallies, scoring once on the power play and adding two assists. Dylan Yeo and Ryan Hamilton each had a pair of assists for Toronto, while Mark Owuya got the win after stopping 36-of-40 shots.

For St. John's, Kael Mouillierat had a goal and two assists and Dean Arsene had two helpers. Spencer Machacek, Patrice Cormier and Ben Maxwell also scored, while Mark Dekanich was tagged with the loss, making 17 saves.

All Hail Kael: Kael Mouillierat recorded seven points (1G, 6A) in just two games this past week. On Wednesday, the Alberta native notched a club-record four assists as the IceCaps dominated the Connecticut Whale 5-1. In addition to setting the team record for most assists in a game, Mouillierat tied the club mark for most points in a game with four. On Sunday, Mouillierat picked up a goal and two assists in a 5-4 loss to Toronto.

O'Dell Rings the Bell: Eric O'Dell scored three goals against the Whale, the first hat trick by an IceCap this season. The team's last hat trick was also recorded by O'Dell back on April 7, 2012 vs. Springfield.

Jets Update: Winnipeg won three of four games last week, including wins over Buffalo (2-1), Carolina (4-3) and New Jersey (4-2). Blake Wheeler fired two goals in the victory over the Hurricanes, while former IceCaps blueliner Paul Postma recorded an assist (his fifth of the season) against the Devils. The Jets only loss was a 5-3 setback to the Philadelphia Flyers. Postma now has six points in 17 games with the Jets.

Redmond on the Mend: On Thursday former IceCaps defenceman Zach Redmond was rushed to hospital in the Raleigh, North Carolina to repair a laceration to his right femoral artery and vein in his mid-thigh region, after he was seriously cut by a teammate's skate in practice. He could miss the remainder of the 2012-13 season.

Injury Report: Defencemen Ben Chiarot (hip flexor) returned to action and played in both games last week after missing the previous three. Currently injured: Jason King (head), John Albert (upper body), Hunter Tremblay (head), Ivan Telegin (head), Derek Meech (undisclosed), and Ryan Schnell (lower body).
