Carolina Mudcats News Release
Fayetteville, N.C. - Carolina (19-12, 52-42) started the first game of the de facto doubleheader up 2-0 in the top of the second against Fayetteville (14-17, 44-53). Luis Castillo gave the Mudcats a late lead with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth to secure the win.
Carolina failed to capitalize on the chances they had going one for four with runners in scoring position.
The Mudcats found a way to win even when their offense was struggling to connect throughout most of the game. Carolina only managed four hits throughout the game and three after the resumption. The Mudcats came back from down 3-2 by responding with a run in the fifth to tie the game. Luis Castillo then put Carolina up with an RBI single in the sixth giving the Mudcats the game-deciding run.
After the resumption of play, Alexander Vallecillo started for Carolina, going four and one-third innings. Vallecillo gave up five hits, and three runs while striking out three in his outing. Chase Costello (W, 4-1) picked up the win in relief going the last one and two-thirds innings. Costello only gave up one hit while allowing no runs and striking out one on his way to the win.
Tyler Guilfoil (L, 2-2) started for Fayetteville, going four and one-third innings in his loss. Guilfoil gave up two hits and two runs but struck out nine during the loss.
Carolina failed to carry the momentum into game two of the doubleheader. The Mudcats dropped the game 8-1, only collecting six hits and going two for four with runners in scoring position. Jesus Rivero (L, 0-1) picked up the loss giving up four runs and walking four more in three and one-third innings.
The Mudcats return to action Wednesday for game two of the six-game series with the Woodpeckers. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. with Quinton Low expected to get the start for Carolina.
