Tetachuk Backstops Warriors to Win in Calgary

20-year-old goalie Carl Tetachuk made 30 saves on Sunday to lead the Moose Jaw Warriors to a 4-1 win over the Calgary Hitmen at Scotiabank Saddledome.

Calgary came hard at the Warriors throughout the opening period. They did a good job creating turnovers inside the Moose Jaw line which led to extra attack time.

As the period continued, the Warriors started to get into a groove.

With under four minutes left in the frame, Atley Calvert made a pass-up the ice through the neutral zone to spring Riley Niven on a breakaway. Niven's shot beat goalie Brayden Peters but it went off the crossbar and then sat on the goal line. 18-year-old Josh Hoekstra charged the net and knocked in his second of the year to give Moose Jaw a 1-0 lead.

Moose Jaw managed just five shots in the first period, and in the second period, they were credited with just four shots despite the quality attack time that they created.

7:28 into the middle frame, Jagger Firkus wrestled the puck away from a pair of Hitmen in the Calgary right corner. The 17-year-old then passed the puck to the blueline for Max Wanner who was able to get a shot towards the net. Calgary product and Warriors rookie Nathan Pilling was standing on top of the Hitmen crease where he deflected the puck past the goalie, his fourth of the year gave Moose Jaw a 2-0 lead.

Inside the final minute of the second period, Atley Calvert controlled the puck behind the Calgary net and was able to set up Majid Kaddoura inside the left circle where he scored his second of the year.

Calgary was finally able to respond with seconds left in the second period on a goal from Grayden Siepmann.

In the third, the Warriors did a good job defensively to limit the Hitmen to five shots in the frame, while on the other side of the ice, they added a late empty-net Cordel Larson to put the game away.

Atley Calvert led the Warriors with two assists, looking at special teams, Moose Jaw did not have a power-play and was 2-for-2 on the penalty kill.

Moose Jaw's 3-game Alberta road trip continues on Tuesday with their final meeting of the season against the Central Division-leading Edmonton Oil Kings.
