Chiefs Avoid Shutout, Fall 4-1 to Rival Americans

Kennewick, Wash. - The Spokane Chiefs narrowly avoided another shutout Saturday night, losing to the rival Tri-City Americans 4-1 on the road.

After a slow start, Sasha Mutala kicked things off for Tri-City at 15:53 in the first period with help from Samuel Huo and Marc Lajoie. That'd be the only scoring action in the first 20 minutes of the game.

The Americans blew the game open in the second period, with three unanswered goals at 4:29 (Mutala), 8:40 (Huo) and 14:29 from Mutala again to complete his hat trick.

The Chiefs were able to keep Tri-City at bay for the rest of the game, successfully killing four penalties in the third period.

Defenseman Timafey Kovgoreniya got Spokane on the board and shut down the shutout in the nick of time, firing the puck from the point to the net at 17:54 in the third.

Despite the loss, Mason Beaupit was strong in net, turning aside 30 of 34 shots faced on the night. Spokane were outshot 34-30 and went 0-for-1 on the power play and 4-for-5 on the penalty kill.

Up next, the Chiefs head to Portland to take on the Winterhawks Sunday night.
