Swift Current Broncos News Release
Swift Current, Sask. - Two goals from Mathew Ward and 30 saves from Isaac Poulter led the Swift Current Broncos (14-18-4-1) to a 3-1 win over the Lethbridge Hurricanes (14-16-2-1) Saturday night.
The Broncos survived a penalty kill mid-way through the first period, and would go on to open the scoring late in the opening frame.
Off a faceoff win in the Hurricanes zone, Owen Pickering fired the puck on goal from the left point. Hurricanes goalie Jared Picklyk couldn't find it through traffic, as the puck hit him but he wasn't able to swallow it up for a faceoff.
Clarke Caswell banged away at the rebound before Mathew Ward was able to tuck the puck in, giving the Broncos a 1-0 lead with 3:54 remaining in the first. Caswell picked up the primary assist on the goal, his first career WHL point.
After killing off another penalty late in the period, the Broncos went into the intermission up 1-0, and added to their lead early in the second.
After Pickering's shot from the high slot was blocked, Ward found the rebound and turned and fired from between the circles, beating Picklyk on the glove side for his second of the game just 4:23 into the middle frame. Pickering and Raphael Pelletier got helpers on the goal.
While the remainder of the period was scoreless, there was no shortage of chances as Lethbridge outshot the Broncos 15-9 over the course of the second period. That also included two more penalty kills for the Broncos, who would finish the night 6-for-6 on the penalty kill.
Carter Stebbings pushed the Broncos lead to 3-0 in the later stages of the third period, jumping on a rebound off a shot from Cole Nagy for his fourth of the year with 7:30 left in regulation. Josh Filmon had the secondary assist.
Swift Current was given a four-minute power play late in the game as Yegor Klavdiev was given a double minor for high sticking, but the Broncos had a tough time getting set up in the Lethbridge zone, and then gave up a shorthanded goal.
Hayden Smith broke in on Poulter for a short breakaway, and scored his first WHL goal with 1:50 remaining to cut the Broncos lead to 3-1. Despite another penalty kill for the final 40 seconds, the Broncos held their lead and snapped a four-game losing streak with the 3-1 victory.
The Broncos now prepare to wrap up their three-game homestand by hosting the Red Deer Rebels (24-12-2-1) on Tuesday, before a three-game weekend in Alberta next weekend.
Announced attendance was 1,296.
