Santa Cruz Warriors News Release
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - As a result of replaying the last 0:17.5 of their January 19 meeting, the Santa Cruz Warriors (23-26) hosted a rare doubleheader with the Iowa Wolves (24-25) tonight at Kaiser Permanente Arena. Iowa's Michael Bryson secured a steal and transition layup to win the first game 113-111, and despite 18 points from returning forward Terrence Jones, Iowa also emerged victorious, 101-112, in the regularly scheduled contest.
Six Santa Cruz Warriors scored in double figures, with two-way forward Chris Boucher scoring 14 points and guard Jeremy Pargo logged 12 points and nine assists. The Warriors reserves tied a season-high with 52 points tonight, with Terrence Jones scoring 18 in his first game since February 25, and guard Avry Holmes had 12 points on 5-of-8 from the field.
Iowa's Amile Jefferson had 23 points on 9-of-13 from the field to go with 17 rebounds and five assists in 34 minutes. Center Justin Patton, currently on assignment from the Minnesota Timberwolves, tallied 16 points with nine rebounds and two blocks. The Wolves bench unit was led by G League veterans Bryson and Shawne Williams, who had 16 points each.
Iowa began their wire-to-wire dominance by jumping out to a 14-2 run in the first three minutes of action, but a Warriors wave substitution ignited a 14-5 run to keep the game close after the first. Bryson's three bombs in the second quarter (3of-4 3FG) helped Iowa build a double-digit lead despite 12 points off rim runs from Boucher and reserve center Trevor Thompson.
In the third quarter, guard Michael Gbinije shot 4-for-5 for eight points and Boucher went 2-for-2 for 4 points to pace the Warriors in the third, but the rest of the team only hit 4-of-19 from the field (21.1 percent) in the period. Guard Avry Holmes anchored the fourth quarter offense with seven points, but Iowa extended their lead to 20 points to secure two victories in less than two hours.
