New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
MANCHESTER - The New Hampshire Fisher Cats took an early lead but fell further and further behind Monday night, eventually losing 8-2 to the Hartford Yard Goats at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.
The Fisher Cats (32-43) fell to a season-worst 11 games below .500, giving up 14 hits and issuing five walks to the visitors. Hartford (41-33) snapped a two-game losing streak, moving ahead in the third inning and never looking back. It was the third loss in a row for the Fisher Cats, who are 8-17 in 25 June games.
New Hampshire opened the scoring in the bottom of the first against Hartford starter Zach Jemiola. Jason Leblebijian led off with a single, and moved to second on a walk drawn by Rowdy Tellez with one out. Ryan Lavarnway sliced a single to left field, plating Leblebijian and putting New Hampshire ahead 1-0.
Hartford evened the score in the top of the second inning against New Hampshire starting pitcher Jeremy Gabryszwski. Rosell Herrera singled with one out, stole second and moved to third on a single by Ryan McMahon before Corelle Prime brought Herrera home on a sacrifice fly, tying the game at 1-1.
The Yard Goats exploded in the top of the third inning. Gabryszwski walked Zach Osborne with one outs, then gave up three straight extra-base hits to Raimel Tapia, David Dahl and Pat Valaika, with Dillon Thomas singling home Valaika to make it 5-1 in favor of Hartford.
The visitors added two more in the top of the fifth. Tapia led off with a single, and advanced to second on an errant throw by Tellez at first. Dahl dropped a bunt single, moving Tapia to third base with nobody out. Valaika hit a bouncer to short that Leblebijian threw away, with Tapia scoring on the play. With one away, McMahon hit a flare to left off reliever Daniel Schlereth that plated Dahl and extended Hartford's lead to 7-1.
New Hampshire got a run back in the bottom of the fifth. Matt Dean knocked a one-out double to left-center field, and came in on a one-out fielder's choice by Roemon Fields to cut Hartford's lead to 7-2.
Hartford got another run in the top of the eighth against Fisher Cats reliever John Stilson, who allowed a leadoff single by Jan Vazquez. Stinson got Osborne to pop out, but Tapia singled and Dahl walked to load the bases. Valaika lined a single to right to score Vazquez, running the lead to 8-2.
Gabryszwski took the loss, surrendering seven runs on eight hits (both season-worsts) over four innings; he walked one and struck out two. Schlereth allowed two hits and a walk in one inning. Murphy Smith pitched two innings of scoreless relief, surrendering one hit and walking two while whiffing three. Stilson gave up a run on three hits and a walk in one inning of action. Matt Dermody pitched a perfect ninth inning with one strikeout.
The Fisher Cats will try to get back on the winning track Tuesday night, with left-hander Shane Dawson starting for New Hampshire against Hartford righty German Marquez. First pitch from Northeast Delta Dental Stadium is at 7:05 p.m., and Ben Gellman has the call starting at 6:45 p.m. on the Fisher Cats Radio Network.
